Great performance. There's a 2xLP version that's worth checking out. A few weeks later the GoGD lifted the roof at the same venue.
One of my favorites of the series. Love the extended "session reels" and how they ran through stuff. Plus, you get to hear Miles call the band a bunch of ********ers
I wish more of Sonny's euro trio tours had been recorded for release, like that 1967 set w/Han Bennink (which I think I'll play today thanks to your post). Ruud Jacobs was on bull fiddle for that swing. Do you know who was behind the kit on this '65 gig?
B-3 jazz today: now playing Lonnie Smith Live at Club Mozambique, earlier was playing Jimmy Smith Groovin' at Smalls' Paradise (Volume 1), both from the Blue Note 80th Anniversary series. In between I listened to Dylan from Glasgow May 19, 1996. Vocals are a bit oversaturated on that one and the acoustic set is incomplete, but still a fine listen. Also spun The Hold Steady, Heaven Is Whenever before the B-3 festivities began.
As for Han Bennink, he's on Dolphy's Last Date (which I believe is a misnomer, although it was recorded on June 2, 1964), but I'm not familiar w/ Ruud Jacobs. As for the drummer in the Rollins viddy, I believe it's Alan Dawson.
Just found out about this, right this minute- too late, evidently. The LP set is sold out. Track Listing Side One: Journey In Satchidananda. Side Two: A Love Supreme. Side Three: My Favorite Things. Side Four: Leo. lol, I will now access the Youtube and try to jam along with Side One on my little SX acoustic travel guitar (I took off the bottom (low E) string, which had hampered the sound- leading to the same effect as stuffing a big woofer in a cabinet that's too small for it. Now it's a whole new instrument. Standard tuning...)
Big Bennink fan here and have seen him a few times, being a follower of the Euro-Out-Avant scene. The thing I love about that gig with Rollins is that Bennink pulls no punches and Sonny responds to it. The great and underrecorded Alan Dawson from Boston via Pennsylvania, who was also touring with Byard that year. Great live album from Lennies. And doncha know, I have this performance (Dawaso/NHOP '65) found here
I spun this the other night (did I post?) anyhow, it was the JP remaster LP (digi source) and I was surprised at how good it sounded. Had not played it since that box came out.
I have the Diament CDs but I’ve been meaning to check out some of the deluxe editions which apparently sound good too.
Nice! I like them and have a few of their albums (and have seen them live a few times), but am not familiar with that one.
Peter and the Test Tube Babies - “Elvis is Dead” The main riff sounds like it’s nicked from The Who’s “Rael”. They made a nice little tune with it.
If you have the Diament CD's of the Zeppelin catalog (minus 4, which he mysteriously didn't do), you have what I consider their best digital representation. If I had to live with only the Diaments (and Joe Sidore's 4), I'd be just fine, thank you.
