Pierre Bensusan doesn't get mentioned much.
Billy Corgan. A lot of people weren't aware that his playing was the driving sound behind the music since he was branded more as a frontman/singer than guitarist.
John McGeoch’s guitar on Into The Light from the Siouxsie and the Banshees album Juju is amazing, so many people don’t even hear it until I point it out and listen to it for the entire track - reaction every time is Wow. It just contorts and weaves through the track, it sounds like it’s going through chorus, distortion and echo pedals.
Rory Block (amazing acoustic blues artist)
James McCartney, sadly condemned to be forever overshadowed by his illustrious pater - who, ironically, was never much of a guitarist himself. Life can be so cruel!
I really dig Kurt Vile's stylings. It's so much different than the minor and modal thing that I always went for. He has a way of making a 10 minute tune not sound tiring.
My favourite guitarist, thanks for giving him a mention.
Anyone who plays guitar knows that's horse manure. Add him to the underrated list, apparently.
Think it's fair to say that he's highly regarded among guitarists, though, rather than underrated.
While we're at it, add John Lennon who is seldom mentioned but was an excellent guitarist.
On Lennon's lead guitar:
1. Mike Holmes IQ
2. Andy Latimer Camel
3. Steve Rothery Marillion
4. Daniel Riddle--King Black Acid
5. Alan Holdsworth--Soft Machine, Gong, UK, Bill Bruford band, solo (RIP)
(numbers are not rankings btw)
If anything, OVERrated. Imo.
Jeff "Skunk" Baxter
Kim Simmonds wasn't in Foghat. He was only one that didn't leave Savoy Brown to form Foghat.
Here's a couple more:
William Reid - Jesus and Mary Chain - criminally underrated
Robin Simon - Ultravox and Magazine
Ed King - Strawberry Alarm Clock and Lynyrd Skynyrd
Ricky Gardiner - Bowie(Low)
Robert Quine was the first guitarist that came to mind. I’ve been listening to Destiny Street Complete lately.
Cannot see Volker Kriegel mentioned in here. One member is looking for him on MPS. A good choice...
