Not that surprising in theory, but I was really happy to see that Cliff Martinez and Jack Sherman (who played together on the first Red Hot Chili Peppers album and tour back in 1984) still hang out together.
It looks too much like Frank to not be him. And besides, it's possible that he might have shaved the goatee off once in awhile and this may have been one of those times. Plus, I'm the one who picked the photo for Davy Jones 'Mutant Monkees' book and he confirmed that it was Frank and he would have known.
The only thing that looks like Frank to me is the moustache, and even that is too short on the sides. The hair and the nose don't look like his to me either.
Mike Bloomfield and Jerry Garcia Unexpected in the light of Bloomfield's comments on the San Francisco scene: "I think San Francisco music isn't good music. Not good bands. They're amateur cats; they're the amateurs... I don't dig 'Good Morning, Little School Girl' by the Grateful Dead. I don't dig Pigpen trying to sing blues; it don't sound like blues. It sounds like some white kid trying to sing blues. It drags me, they're not funky. They don't have a good beat. I can't explain it. It's not the real ****, and it's not even a good imitation. It's not even like the Stones. I don't dig the Airplane. I think they're a third rate rock and roll band. I don't dig Country Joe and the Fish. I find them an abomination, a fraud perpetrated on people. I don't dig Big Brother; I dig Janis, but I think Big Brother is just a wretched, lame group of cats who she carries for no reason at all." Sorry for the negativity; I just found it too interesting not to include with the picture.
Do you know the date (or year) of the Bloomfiled quote? Maybe it was before he met or saw any of them in person? Maybe he was just basing his opinion of them from their early records. If the quote is from say 1966-67, then compared to the first 2 Paul Butterfield records with Bloomfield on guitar, the first few albums by the SF bands do sound like "amateur cats". Arnie
It's actually from April '68... Here's the whole interview: http://www.jannswenner.com/Archives/Mike_Bloomfield_Part2.aspx He also goes on to discuss Jorma Kaukonen, taking a few digs at him: "Jorma is not one of the best rock guitar players . . . When he plays blues, he plays it sloppy." Funny enough, here are the three of them in the same room: Jerry, Mike, and Jorma
Bassist John Kahn worked with Bloomfield before becoming a collaborator with Garcia for over 20 years.
^ One of those two is not a musician, as you know, but I just couldn't resist posting it because that's a definition of an odd pairing. Here's another cool bunch of guys hanging out together
