Slightly off-topic but Joe Pernice tweeted a while back the his kid had formed a band called Pen Island. Apparently, the name was developed with an eye to how it would read as a URL, Twitter handle, etc. :)

    The Golliwogs?

Very offensive word in the UK.

This made me think of the current (and interesting) Supreme Court case -- a band called "The Slants", who were denied a trademark for their name.

Not that they went anywhere near the charts, but Snot and Butt Trumpet were both on a major label. Ah what merchandising possibilities they presented.

I know they weren't destined to be the next Beatles, but I love Gorky's Zygotic Mynci's music, but am a little bothered by the name.

In general, I hate the trend of giving your band a name with no vowels.

  9. According to Factory Records head Tony Wilson, label signings Crispy Ambulance never got as far as they should've because of that awful name. What the hell made them go with that?

  10. I was expecting some kind of country-tinged punk band. Imagine my surprise when I finally heard them.

"Ex-ta-see" vs. Just saying the letters...which is the correct pronunciation.

Not a band, but I know that I was put off by Bryan Scary's name before I actually heard his music. Immensely talented guy that should definitely be more widely known.

Well if they couldn't think of a decent band name i didn't expect the music to be any good.

  17. One of the many extremely obscure bar bands I played in wanted to use that name. But after some discussion, it was determined that there were only three of us, and we were all circumcised.

Loverboy (yes, they were popular, made good music and sold records, but the dumb smarmy name held them back)

I seriously doubt that the name is the only thing holding The Gerogerigegege back from mass appeal.

I first heard about The Fugs in high school. Someone smuggled "Virgin Fugs" into school in a Vanilla Fudge cover. :yikes: That ESP Disk looked (and sounded) like a bootleg.

CIA Man is a good song despite the F-bombs. This bands name while controversial in the 60s, doesn't even make a dent as far as some of the names of bands over the past 20 years.

That's an excellent name for a band. Anybody who has issues can come talk to me.
