Does anyone know why more than one well respected manufacturer of high end audio equipment would market a line of cable under the name ISIS? For my son, who recently served in USMC special forces, that name would have the same appeal as NAZI had to my WWII vet father-in-law.

I don’t mean to stir up anything political. It’s not about how a word gets ruined by what it’s associated with; it’s that this does indeed happen. I just can’t imagine why anyone would give a product a name with icky associations.

    Quisling
    Benedict Arnold
    KKK
    Sauron
    Pol Pot
    Koresh
    Dodge (jk!)

Aren’t there a few names we just shouldn’t put on our products?

So I guess buying a product made by Schiit is out of the question?

By the way I have a couple of their products and they are very good.

Well, since I currently own a Challenger, Charger, Ram, (and Jeep SRT), maybe I would buy a cable named Dodge!

I would bet that the ones using the name have a connotation besides what we currently associate with the name. Probably something relating the Egyptian goddess Isis. I know quite a few combat vets and I can tell you that none of them would give a rats about such naming and likely get a laugh out of it.

I don't disagree, William, but Isis was also the name of the famous Egyptian goddess. Did this company spell the name in all caps? If so, poor marketing decision.

I believe Audio Note ISIS has been around longer. Or at least longer than the name has widely carried the associations of which you speak. And of course the ancient Egyptians get first dibs on the name. I think it's a bit much to ask them to change their product name.

IMO that one is more vulgar and junior high locker room than truly obscene or offensive.

You should buy some ISIS cables and burn them on YouTube.

And I have a 2002 4x4 Dakota with 220,000 miles on it! So maybe I would too!

But you couldn’t pay me to buy a cable named Fiesta! Ha!

Then there's Anthrax...who in 2001 joked they might have to change their name to "Basket Full Of Puppies" following the Anthrax infection scare.

I believe Schiit chose their name intentionally. If you read their web site and product descriptions, they certainly embrace the not-so-tongue-in-cheek reference.

There was also a band called ISIS, founded in 1997. Some things just happen to pre-date the militant group (established in 1999, but only really on the radar some years later) that gave the name such negative connotations...

And yet, evidently Mitsubishi still sells the Pajero in South America, despite its slang Spanish meaning of "one who pleasures himself often"o_O

Last time I bought some razors, I chuckled at the packaging saying "four lame blades". It was at a dollar store, so I figured they were just that.

Indeed. There's a restaurant group around here called "Forking Good Restaurants." Now that, for some reason, I find offensive. Maybe because it's less clever or less overt.

I always thought it was funny that there was a car called "Caprice", like it might just decide not to start one morning, but the most unfortuntate product name has to be the old diet candy called Ayds.

There are numerous bands, songs, organisations, places and companies called Isis that have been around before the Islamic State group existed.

That's too bad. They're made in the USA and make quality products. But I'm sure that there are other people that feel as you do. You get a lot bang for the buck though so they can call their company whatever they want as long as they deliver the goods. But I do understand where your coming from.

I don't need what they sell and won't buy from a company that is so juvenile that they think that's a clever name. I don't care if they were made in Idaho. But I was never their target demographic in any event.

Regarding Schiit, I owned their Valhalla headphone amp. Nice product. Fair price. Good communications with the company.

My biggest gripe with Schiit is that they've spawned endless groan-inducing, cringe-worthy jokes, and the same corny ass jokes get repeated every time there's a thread about one of their products.

We get it! We got it the first million times, too! Give it a rest!
