I think The Fox is patchy, as was A Single Man. I believe a really good album could have been made from the best tracks from these two albums.

Beat me to it. Always one of my favorites. I saw him on the 40th Anniversary Goodbye Yellow Brick Road Tour and he did "Roy Rogers" with old Roy Rogers film clips on the video screens, getting me a little misty-eyed. I've often wondered if Roy ever heard the song and if he liked it. It may well have been at least a moderate hit if he had re-released it after Rogers died (like he rewrote "Candle In the Wind" for Princess Di). A very touching tribute.

"Suit of Wolves". A really excellent song, that for whatever reason was not included on the original release of The One, appearing as a bonus track on later releases. I can only assume it was left off because it was thought to be too similar in style to some of the other tracks, such as "The North".

Indian sunset is a cool song . I would include sixty years on.

  7. One of my favorites, which also is the first Elton John song I ever heard and seems to be missing from most EJ collections is "Border Song". Originally issued on MCA's Congress label, in the U.S., I didn't hear it until it was soon re-issued on MCA's UNI label as a compatible stereo 45. It was included on EJ's first UNI LP, but, also included, "Your Song" became his first big U.S. hit.

A brilliant song, lovely organ melody and wonderful lyrics. Personally I believe this should have replaced Whitewash County on the album.

Earlier somebody singled out Sugar on the Floor... Completely forgot that one... Such a tender vocal, Elton should have made more songs in this vein back then. Just him and a piano and maybe a guitar or a bass - or both. Just a simple, naked way of building melodies.

Um, “Song for Guy” peaked at #4 on the UK singles chart.

    That’s a pretty big hit.

Yes, yes indeed no. 4 would be one sizable hit!!!
Umm seeing as I myself live in the US, and have never been to the UK!!
Unless I spent my time reading old UK charts, I personally just might be unaware of that fact but, thank you for pointing out that my UK chart knowledge is insufficient to participate in an informal music forum discussion!
I for one will sleep more soundly this evening now knowing this fact!

Perhaps post #109 right above yours, might not be enough of a mea culpa for the many here that are so much more knowledgeable than I.

I wonder how many “moderate” Elton John fans have even listened to Tumbleweed Connection?

I think it's the only one of his studio albums where no singles were released from it anywhere in the world. Even so, "Love Song", "Where To Now St. Peter", and "Burn Down The Mission" all received extensive FM radio airplay in the US. "Come Down In Time" is also pretty well known, largely due to the excellent Sting cover included on the best-selling Two Rooms tribute album. Even without any singles, Tumbleweed Connection managed to reach the Top 10 in the US album chart upon its belated American release in early 1971 (it came out in the UK in late 1970).

I always thought that if "All the Nasties" had have been released as single, it would have done well.

Man, lighten up a little. No one is attacking you for naming a certain song in the thread. All we are doing is venturing the information that the song was a sizeable hit in many places, something that some people may not know and may be interested to learn. What's wrong with that? Would you prefer people just keep the information to themselves? It is a discussion forum, after all.
