I think the Geoff part of the dilemma is easily solved. He wasn't there when it was filmed/taped. He got involved later when somebody asked him to destroy it. Could have been years later.
I think you raise a good question if we are talking about film or tape, though. The story clearly references video. But that could just be bad reporting.
I can't help but wonder if it was marked for destruction simply because it was Pete Best on drums, not Ringo.

He worked with the Beatles on June 6, 1962. His second day at work. As noted on Wikipedia.

(Under supervision of an Assistant Engineer)

According to his Wikipedia page, he was an assistant engineer when the Beatles did their 1962 session with Pete Best

From Beatles Bible, songs recorded that day. Recording: Besame Mucho, Love Me Do, PS I Love You, Ask Me Why – The Beatles’ first Abbey Road recording session. If it's June 6, 1962.

So he made a film of an unknown band and EMI asked him to destroy the film but he kept it and voilà, out of the safe 60 years later...

Syd Barrett was present too. He played a wild one note solo for 63 minutes before going catatonic...

I have honestly never been impressed when The Beatles jammed. Sometimes, by luck, it gelled. Jamming was not The Beatles’ force. They could do extremely many other things. Jamming was something they were not very good at.

quite possibly this is the June 6th 1962 session, 4 songs were recorded, surely no 'jam' session (luckily).

I would assume (yeah I went there) that's it's proper session takes of the four songs mentioned above. It just wasn't the Beatles aimlessly jamming. That would come in later years. And I agree it was not their strong suit.

Universal should have given Emerick all their tapes.

Here's a list of the songs that Brian had put down for them to possibly record on that date.

One party might own the tape, with another party owning the contents of the tape.

Pinwheel Twist - I know that for some afficionados this must be a well known Beatle original, but I've never even heard of it.

  21. This revelation could mean that Lewishon has to re-think and subsequently re-write the entire second leg of the biography. Adding another decade to the likely release date. Darn!

I wonder why Brian didn't have a song that Pete sung recorded, he still did sing live

We already have two of the four songs recorded although I guess there were probably multiple takes. There's no way this is film - that' s pretty much impossible (both that it happened and that we haven't heard of it before) - but it would be interesting to hear PS I Love You and Ask Me Why with Best on drums from the session, or even more takes of the others. Although I'm sure lawyers will spirit it away to a vault and we'll never hear any of it...!
