I'm surprised Grant hasn't already posted this...The Soulful Detroit Forum is frequented by Motown tech guy Mike McLean, and he's recently posted a *bunch* of vintage photos of the studios, equipment, etc as well as posting tons of insight about things. There's plenty of other cool stuff happening on the forum as well, but here are the pictures: Mike McLean Photo Presentation 1 Mike McLean Photo Presentation 2 Mike McLean Photo Presentation 3
BTW, that second link doesn't have any photos, just a bit of discussion. The first and third links have tons of photos (and great discussion) though.
The Soulful Detroit forum is one of the best reads on the 'net, and I've lurked there for awhile. With posters like Bob Olhsson, Marshall Crenshaw, Harry Weinger and many others that have been around the industry for a long time, there are some real insights to be found. If you have any interest in Motown whatsoever, ignore Soulful Detroit and the Motown boards only at your own risk.
I bookmarked the site but haven't really nosed around it yet. I did see you, Luke, Mike McClean, and a few others there.
Also, that Livonia Ken fella who sometimes posts over there is some kind of genius. ...and handsome, too. Regards,
Absolutely fascinating pictures. No disrespect intended, but that recording studio kind of looks like more than a few bad '50s Sci-fi movies I grew up with!
