I'm in the market for a pair of vintage speakers of the 60's-70's, and I'd like them to have plywood cabinets. No particular reason, I just like plywood over MDF/chipboard for their extra rigidity and longevity. I've been doing some research and so far I've only found one pair of well-regarded speakers of the era with plywood cabinets, the Yamaha NS-670/690. Are there any others? Thank you.

Spendor BC1. Just bought a lovely set. Sounds amazing. A true BBC classic speaker.

Hasn't Klipsch always used Baltic Birch plywood?

    Old Tannoys use Plywood
    Very recommendable sound wise
You need some patience to get them, not so often for sale ... and not cheap
I recommend bigears audio in eBay, the guy is very knowledgeable
Mine at from him (from 1970) and look like new, he is also well known on the web

  8. I have a pair of Klipsch Heresys in plain, unfinished plywood.
The original Heresy speakers were made with veneered, or plain, plywood.
When Klipsch introduced the Heresy II they changed to MDF and have been that way since I believe.

My 85 Cornwalls have beautiful walnut veneered, birch plywood cabinets. Last version before they moved to MDF.

My ‘87 Cornwall’s (MkII) are MDF under the (thin) veneer (of Western civilization)...

My AR-2ax speakers have plywood construction, so do my Empire Cavalier 2000s.

I don't think all AR-2ax's are plywood. Later years look like pressboard, but I'm not sure. Never heard of the Cavaliers. Those are pretty rare. Thanks.

They converted to MDF veneer sometime (maybe 1970+). My 2ax speakers are definitely plywood. their woofers are alnico and do not have the usual foam. Although I thought one of the woofers had 1974 on them now that I think of it. I picked them up this spring and went completely thru them, restoring them to as new. The Cavaliers are interesting speakers. Their speaker baskets are made of solid copper, the magnet assemblies are welded together. Not the greatest sounding, but nice for FM.
