How do records end up with their price tag when it comes to old/vintage/ collectible vinyl (such as the entries on popsike.com)? Who decides and what criteria is used to establish a price?

    The marketplace?
It's worth what people are willing to pay.

Rarity, condition and reputation, I guess.

Try selling it for the highest price possible. When it doesn't sell, bring the price down a TOUCH. Once a few sellers get an average, BAM, there's your price.

I can HONESTLY say, I'm more curious about who decides the value of NEW vinyl.

In Canada a single new record can go from $19.99 to $35 regardless of the artist or the quantity of the pressing being done.

Label's price -> distribution price -> retail price. I've heard that distribution companies have a huge influence on the price that the label can charge them, because without a deal with them you cannot sell. One well-know distributor has told a friend that they will now charge him storage for the albums of his they take from him. But I presume all label's try to go for an end-retail price and then things work backwards from there.

The buyers decide what it sells for.

Unfortunately, there are an inordinate number of Comic Book Store Guys setting the initial prices.
