The Battle of Algiers. About counter-revolutionary warfare, and therefore entirely relevant for our times.
I came across this by accident late one night, watched the whole thing and was kinda traumatised by it - such a powerful depiction of the madness of the Eastern Front!
Catch 22 Paths of Glory They Were Expendable Glory All Quiet on the Western Front Casablanca Battle of Algiers The Way to the Stars Went the Day Well Cross of Iron The Bedford Incident The Thin Red Line A Canterbury Tale The Great Escape Grand Illusion Flags of Our Fathers Apocalypse Now The Train
Some on my list, Battleground The Longest Day Cross Of Iron The Train A Bridge Too Far Pork Chop Hill Men In War Hell Is For Heroes Midway (1976) Tora, Tora,Tora Fixed Bayonets! Retreat,Hell!
Just sitting down now to a Saturday night TV viewing of the Battle Of Britain. The first Stuka has just been shot out of the sky It's hard to concentrate on the bloody war when the most beautiful Susannah York is on the screen though
Even though they're not all war movies per se, the ones I always enjoy are: Apocalypse Now The Battle of Algiers The Blue Max Catch-22 Cross of Iron Das Boot The Devil's General Dr. Strangelove Five Graves to Cairo Full Metal Jacket Gallipoli Here Comes The Navy The Hill The Longest Day Night of the Generals Paths of Glory Sahara (1943) The Sand Pebbles The Star of Africa Stripes Twelve O'clock High Went The Day Well Zulu
Don't make the mistake of watching the "Sahara" re-make with Jim Belushi. Beyond awful. The original with Bogart is a classic though.
Cross of Iron is one of the greatest war movies ever made. Its depiction of the damningly scarring psychological aspects of warfare is as devastating --- if not more so --- as the almost balletic, ultra graphic violence that Sam Peckinpah crafted for the action scenes. Unforgettable.
Here's my top ten: Twelve O'Clock High The Train Overlord (1975, not the recent film of the same name) Sink the Bismarck Paths of Glory Doctor Strangelove Failsafe Patton Zulu Stalag 17
Bravo Two Zero, about the British special ops mission behind Iraqi lines in the first Gulf War. It's on the telly right now and I'm going to re-watch it later.
I didn' t mind it but it meandered . There was too much going on. It would have been better if just a few stories were concentrated on. Just proves an all-star cast can't save a movie.
Probably seen this as much as I' ve seen ' The Great Escape '. Terrific movie with a stellar performance from William Holden. My only minor gripe with it is that there is a tad too much comedy bits from Sugar Lips Shapiro and Animal.
Heard a lot of positive things about this movie and asked this guy I know to ' make ' me a copy but it had no subtitles.
My copy, from the early 2000s, which is as shown, has optional English subtitles. The DVD is listed new on Amazon for $20 (search for "come and see klimov"), I pretty sure you won't regret buying it.
