I just picked up the "Back to Vinyl" reissue of Warren Zevon's self titled breakthrough album. Half Price Books is closing them out for $12.49. I know these were selling for $30 a pop. I don't know if they had other sealed reissues, because the were mixed into the regular used bin, but they had four copies of this album.

This is a remarkable work that almost every music lover should own. It is sad to see it as a close-out, but it is well worth owning at tha price.

    Now I'm off to listen!

I saw those same sealed LPs at a HPB here in Austin for the exact same price. They had two of them.

    WTF?

The label evidently felt some need to liquidate them. I'm listening now and so far it sounds great.

Thanks for the heads up. A truly great album that I enjoy very much.

Let me know if you see any other titles please. I didn't have time to scour the bins.

I saw these at the HPB in Dallas. I assume this is "overstock" from Europe. In the U.S. the lp was issued with the Rhino Vinyl sticker in a loose bag, not Back to Vinyl in tight shrink. Should be the same Kevin Gray mastering, though.

It (the KG Rhino Vinyl) sounds good, but I give the nod to the original Asylum issue cut by Artisan if you can find a clean one.

In what way do you find it superior?

Artisan is the drumsticks logo, right?

That's funny. I passed on the ones in HPB because I already have an Asylum copy.

    Turns out, it's an Artisan.

Monroeville, but it seems to have been distributed to all of them.

My favorite Zevon. Frank and Jesse James is a great opener! I already have a vinyl copy of this.

Are they in the vinyl racks, or are they behind the counter?

I have the regular CD and it sounds pretty good. Definitely an eclectic set of songs. It took me a while to appreciate the brilliance, as often happens with first albums, and never to be repeated. I like Excitable Boy also.
    Regards, Trevor.

If memory serves, the eponymous LP was his second album. I believe Wanted Dead or Alive came out much earlier.

I wish there was an "Excitable Boy" reissue as well. All his albums were good, but these two were amazing.

Stopped at Robinson today. They didn't have any of the Zevon, but I got several good albums out of the buck bin including a nice WLP of Hat Trick by America, a minty Clapton - Just One Night (a double album) "Mastered by Trutone" and a Robert Johnson album seemingly mastered by our own Barry Diament. It was a very worthwhile stop.

In fact, I think the buck bin had better pickin's than the regular rack. How does that work?

Initial pressings of the original issue Warren Zevon album were pressed by CBS, and sound pretty good...

Drumsticks logo is one way to describe it I suppose. I find the original light and lively whereas the reissue has more of a thick and plodding character. The reissue seems to have gained some bass at the expense of some boogie woogie factor.
Do you mean cheap at HPB or in general? Excitable Boy was recently reissued by Friday Music.
Yeah, we're talking about the same thing. Mastered by Artisan, pressed by Columbia.

My Zevon S/T Rhino was noisy, even after a couple cleanings. And overall, to me, it was of Kevin Gray's lesser efforts, and I love his stuff.

Also have the original pressing, and it sounds much more open and dynamic.
