I had a 45 of Captain Kangaroo as a child. "Two Little Magic Words" was the song on it. He spoke the lyrics, more than sang.

And before this thread devolves into rumors and untruths, Mr. Green Jeans was not Frank Zappa's father. ;)

As they can open any door with ease, recall what the two words are.

Not that I know, but there was a tenuous connection between that TV show to the rock world.

In the '70s, there was a rumor that the "Captain Kangaroo" character Mr. Green Jeans was Frank Zappa's father. This was because Zappa had a song called "Son of Mr. Green Genes" on the Hot Rats album. It was titled that because it was an instrumental version of a song that had been on Uncle Meat. The actor who played Mr. Green Jeans was not actually Frank's dad.

To offer a more serious answer to the question...: :)

Not a pop/rock band, as far as I know... he was already working in television in the early days of "Howdy Doody" (1948), so I have my doubts that he had the time (or the inclination) to pursue a separate full-time musical career.

Maybe your friend meant Mr. Green Jeans.

I can’t find it via googling it, but I remember seeing Captain Kangeroo at the Canadian Expedition in the 1960’s.

Reminds me of my relative Lock Martin being the Gentle Giant on a children’s show for a period of time.

I still have a letter I received from Fred Rogers in the early 80’s. I can confirm that Mister Rogers wasn’t a sniper.

I had this album as a child and listened to it a lot.

Although well-intentioned, it must be said that the LP presented a VERY white-bread version of jazz to its young listeners!

What kind of band? Captain Kangaroo went on the air in 1955, and before that Keeshan had been Clarabell the Clown on "Howdy Doody".

Maybe when he showed up in that jacket, everybody thought he was the band director.
Then when he took out his baton, and all those ping-pong balls started falling, they
    knew they'd all been pranked.

On Sundays my dad used to play this for us kids on reel to reel. I've got the CD version and the IHOP LP version which I got signed when he did some promotional work for the company I worked for.

No, that was Mister Rogers. Captain Kangaroo saved Lee Marvin’s life on Iwo Jima.

    None of that is true.

Keeshan has been denied parole 7 times since 1963. He has been denied again in 2019. Families will never forget the tv time this monster stole from them.

Sam Phillips did some Sun sessions on him in '54 to prepare for Elvis departure, but they ended up as part of the package when they sold Elvis contract to RCA for 35,000. Then stardom beckoned.

Thanks everyone I’ll tell my friend she was incorrect. She said he was the lead singer in a popular band. :p
