I never said they "never made it" in the US. I said they were never one of the "biggest' in the US. There's a wide gulf between those two poles.

Surely the Police were bigger worldwide than the Jam during that era?

I'm not a fan but I have to admit for a short period (maybe 18 months) they were the biggest band in the UK. Really captured the zeitgeist of the time (sexist football lads and lager music), all over the TV and radio, huge gigs, invited to number 10 etc.

    Worldwide though no way.

Loved The Jam. It was a shame they never made it here.

Oasis were too one dimensional to maintain a world following. They were ok, just not great. IMO.

I remember reading something that at that time there were four bands that could almost guarantee a number 1 single in the UK - The Jam, Police, Blondie and Abba. Of those then the Jam were more focussed on the UK and couldn't be added trying to 'break' the US.

  11. I saw them is a small San Francisco club their first time around . Maybe 150 people tops. Enjoyed it. Didn't need to go see them again.

But I do enjoy them. Not very original but good.

  12. 95 the Beatles Anthology was bigger :tiphat:

Probably. America doesn't mean ****, look at the biggest sport in the world, or the biggest motorsport

  14. You set yourself up to a backlash when you ask about bands like Oasis in this way.

Yes I enjoy them but when the band members are big dicks, how else can we all respond ?

It was a great time in the U.K. though, with the Anthology blending with britpop, don't you think?

Especially, the Free As A Bird video.

  16. Yeah a lot of great U.K. Bands. Most weren't dicks like oasis

That arrogance and swagger was part of their charm, though.

Working class lads from Manchester, making it very very big. Right through Knebworth.

The arrogance was one of the things that put me off.
I think it did appeal to a lot of people however.

It really was not. Great TV show, interesting albums but to say the Anthology album was bigger in '95 than What's the Story in just wrong. Not in terms of sales, prestige or importance.

As acts Oasis fall far short of the Beatles, but in 95 Oasis were the bigger band.

Noel G was always full of praise for Cast as a live band, and rightly so.

    Aw yeah.
I remember being in Liverpool during Merseybeat....erm...I meant Britpop and the biggest record shop had their biggest racks at the shop entrance filled with Red, White and Blue albums (all Beatles of course) and they were playing the new Cast record over and over. Now I had heard it but hadn't noticed how great or Beatley it was. So I'm standing there going 'I really must get their album' when it suddenly emerges they're playing live in the store. So...it's by this stage a bit trippy and ends with them signing the album I haven't yet paid for and then me getting it for free when I went to the till.

Cast are just sublime. I deliberately havent checked out their entire catalogue as yet so I can experience some or other transcendent tune you probably already know.
