Unprotected Love is good, not great...spirited performance, cool guitar 3.5/5

Love Affair I remembered this when I played it...I like this one OK, 3.4/5

I'm not going to listen to "Real Dot"...

Nothing But Time is really good, better than I remembered (I didn't really remember it at all)....kind of wears out before the end though....maybe in a different context it would reveal itself to be more..... 3.6/5

Baby Doll is a nice one, maybe a hair too long though 3.8/5

Shadow Cat is long and a bit lacking in focus 2.9/5

I'm finding it quite difficult to rate most of these songs as they're all so overwhelmingly and underwhelmingly pleasant. This is another decent one, nicely played and with a strong Lennonesque middle eight but, once again, it's too mellow to really grab the attention.

I'm not keen on the bzzp, bzzp bits.

    My Mind Is Connected... 3.5/5.

Connected -- the melody of the verses reminds me too much of "When I was Dead" (which I think I rated a 5 because that song is awesome.) I don't begrudge somebody who has written as many songs as RH has to crib from himself, by any means, but it takes me out of this one. 3/5

@Great Face For Radio nailed it above - mellow and pleasant, but those aren't really the qualities I'm looking for in The Soft Boys. Gimme some of that good old anger and paranoia! Another song that just doesn't quite have the edge needed, but at the same time hard to dislike. 3.3/5

A live version of this track appeared on a Bucketful of Brains CD at around this time, too. There are a few waifs and strays like this for the Soft Boys reunion period.

The songwriting is average Hitchcock on this album I suppose, but the sound of the band - YOWZA. That chimey dual guitar attack gives me eargasms.

    Yum, yum, yummy!!

I friggin’ LOVE The Soft Boys, man. What a band.

I'm led to believe this song is about the 9/11 attacks but, other than one verse, there doesn't seem to be much evidence of that within the lyrics. To me it sounds like he's commenting on the soulless aspects of life on the road; another town, another hotel, another restaurant etc. As someone who's travelled extensively as part of my job I can certainly relate to "shuffle away to a lonely keyhole".

Musically it's good, driven by a great riff but I'm not that keen on the vocals. Too many yeahs and shalalas for my liking. Also not sure why he pronounces rivets as rivettes. The Archway Road pops up again; clearly a touchstone. All in all it's one of the better tracks but the album suffers a dramatic dip in quality from here on in.

    Sudden Town 4/5.

Sudden -- it's OK. A driving riff is not enough to raise it to 4, so 3/5

Sudden Town - Terrific guitar sound again. With the allusions to arches and overhead wiring, it's sort of like Trams of Old London on steroids. 4/5

No problem. Side two of Nextdoorland has a similar effect on me, too. ("Hey, how long has it been since I cleaned the shower?")

Oh, those sweet guitars, which make a pretty ordinary song (melodically -- the lyrics are quite good, though) really fun to listen to. (Is this the second song on the album about travel? Am I sensing a theme?)
