Benchmark ADC USB 1. Superb piece of equipment and can be hit second hand quite easily.

I notice there's a few E-MUs, just in case you didn't know, be aware that the E-MU (certainly my 0404 and I'm told other models) inverts the phase. The phase will be fine on your headphones/monitors as you are capturing, but when it sends the signal to your computer via USB the phase inverts. You need to invert the phase with software post capture.

I'm on a PC with mine, so I have no clue on your software. The left, right are a bit tough to manually balance so I use a mono record. I believe 192 is overkill so I record in 32bit 96. It helps me 'see' what albums I'm doing if digital was used in the chain

Sony Hi-MD minidisk, used in "lossless" mode.

Yes, I know it's old and the hardware listed by others is much, much better. But I bought this when it was the best around, and used it for live recording as well.

I would love to replace it with something more modern, as I'm not sure that the lossless recording to wav is really lossless and artifact free. However, for the time being, it does an OK job of recording LPs so I can convert to mp3 to listen to in the car (the only place I have for mp3's).

    Sony pcm-501es.

Nah just kidding, but I did see one for a hundred bucks at the local tip shop. I was tempted just for the historical curiosity factor.

2i2 user here too. I do the same thing @c-eling does manually setting the levels with a mono source and record in 32/96. I use an older version of Adobe Audition as I'm a Cool Edit 2k user from way back when, but I gotta believe that the free Audacity is just as easy to use for recording as well.

Does anyone here use such a device, e.g. the Focusrite, as a DAC? Would you recommend that instead of a dedicated DAC, e.g. from the Schiit range?

The original version of the 2i2 is 24/96 tops, the newer version might work as a DAC.

The original version of the 2i2 had HUGE amounts of out of band noise from the DAC (above 40kHz as I remember). I haven't looked at the new version.

Tascam DR-07 SD card field recorder, SanDisk 32 GB SD cards. When I finish recording, I put the SD card in my Linux box, mount it, and transfer my files to the PC and edit or denoise in Audacity as needed.
