when did you buy and listen? if at the time of release, please tell us your experience of this, then and thoughts about it now, never enough anecdotes from those who were there (i like the album, it reps the times perfectly to me, along with other double-album iconic releases)
I've listened to Metal Machine Music many times. Classic. But... David Johansen - In Style (big Dolls fan but his solo career suuuuucked) My Bloody Valentine - Isn't Anything (awful, dated) The last 5-10 Neil Young albums The Dylan Sinatra albums Mick Jagger Dog**** album
This was pre internet but heard about it from books and word of mouth. But it used very cheaply. I didn't just sit and listen to it but did other things with it on.
while working on a file for awhile below the Bible Belt, a local woman in accounting handed me a copy of the CD she made with her/hubby/a friend it was a metal power-trio with the worker taking the Lemmy role of machine gun bass/rhythm when asked "what did you think" i said it was pretty good, all things considered, and must have been a blast getting a studio to agree and then recording it, didn't ask how that happened
Not quite a one-and-done, but such a disappointment... I find myself revisiting some of the live Stone and Echo material, but have little interest in the new album.
Lou Reed - Metal Machine Music (didn't even make it to the end of side 1) Captain Beefheart - Trout Mask Replica
The Fool I only picked it up because Graham Nash had produced the album and the first time I played it I almost got ear cancer from how awful it was. They sounded like The Incredible String Band, but stoned and talentless.
I could name quite a few, but that is the curse of the collector. It doesn't necessarily mean its a bad album.
Storm and Stress - s/t (Touch and Go records) It made me nauseous in a way no other album ever has. I still feel a little sick thinking about it 25 years later.
No second chance here. I was so excited to see a new Lou Reed release and this was the single greatest disappointment I ever had with an anticipated release... Lou Reed – Metal Machine Music Genre: Electronic Style: Noise Year: 1975
George Harrison's Electronic Sound. And the only reason I played it once was to record all the weird sounds on there so I could use them as sound effects in a sci-fi film I was making for film class.
There's plenty of albums I've listened to on YouTube that I hadn't previously heard and didn't feel compelled to immediately purchase a CD of. Mostly great stuff. Lots of jazz and rock. I hate Fusion. Just needed to say that and didn't want to troll the Fusion thread. Which reminds me, I once bought an Exmagma album 'cos I liked the cover. The music was Fusion. Upon one listen it turned into a frisbee.
