Probably The 1975 for me. I'm not a big fan of the debut but all their other albums are excellent.

I used to have a thing for The Bluetones. I was a huge fan for years. Then I started following one of the band members on Twitter.

Needless to say I found said band member’s personality to be in inverse proportion to his talent. After a few months or so I stopped being such a big fan. And I stopped using Twitter.

Please define "serious." Because serious people I know listen to high brow stuff like Opera and Symphonies. If that's the case, then any form of modern popular music that isn't written by a composer is included.

A lot of so called "serious" music fans don't seem to like, or respect The Eagles very much.

Don't look into it too much. Maybe I shouldn't have used the word.

Generally though, I know people who listen to 'well regarded' artists such as The Beatles and wouldn't give some bands named in this thread, ala Slipknot and ABBA, the time of day.

In my case I don't listen to any of those artists. :D

I also fail to understand why some people consider one popular artist/group as "serious", but not another? Listen to what you like, don't listen to what you don't like, & don't let anyone but yourself be your arbiter of your tastes. Seems simple enough to me.

  14. A lot. I'll just mention The Archies as a poster child example.

And of course my idol, avatar and greatest vocalist who never lived - Hatsune Miku.

I like “Cud”. I have all their vinyl stuff and I like it. If I’m in a bad mood it can help cheer me up. I think “Rich and Strange” is a fantastic tune!

This place seems to have developed a type of "serious music fan" that is heavily suspicious of any music made after 1991 and downright negative towards anything post 2001 so naming artists should be dead easy! :bdance::bdance::bdance:

    How about

    Franz Ferdinand
    Duran Duran
    The Strokes
    The White Stripes

    for a start?

1910 Fruitgum Company. 60s bubblegum in general.

    The Glitter Band.

I'm sure there's lots more. Serious music fans can kiss my a***.

I guess it depends on who is in the conversation.

Some folks think all rock and pop is pointless, and just not worthwhile, compared to jazz or classical for example.

Some folks think anything that was played on the radio is a sellout, and so therefore worthless.

Some folks think that unless someone died of a drug overdose their music isn't worthwhile.

There are many more, to me, weird quirks that don't make much sense to me.

I could list lots of stuff, that some love, and some hate.... but it just becomes a rabbit trail of pointlessness.

One persons "serious" music, is another persons noise, or pretentious rubbish, or whatever the particular put down of the day is.

One persons fun music, is another persons pointless waste of time.

There is room for all music, good, bad and indifferent.
We all have various things that attract us, distract us, and turn us away, and everyone has their rationalizations as to why that is.

I can do genres instead: a few big categories for me would be

    * Pop music in general, including pre rock-era pop
    * Contemporary R&B/soul and dance music in general
    * Country music in general, including modern country
    * Showtunes
    * Music with humorous, jokey, lighthearted, nonsensical etc. lyrics/novelty stuff
    * Not a genre, but also commercial/highly polished stuff in general.

L.A. harmony groups of the late 60's - The Association, Mama's & Papa's, The Turtles, The Cowsills, etc. Love 'em all and don't give a damn who doesn't.

Hipsters generally hate anything happy and joyful. Fug that.

No no no, completely disagree. I think most serious artists and music lovers now appreciate that ABBA were one of the best pop bands of all time.
