I'm listening to Muddy Waters The Folk Singer and it's an incredible experience. The recording is so intimate and the soundstage so massive that you're right in the studio with the musicians and can picture each player.

Anyone got a favorite record that does that for you?

David Sylvian, Secrets of the Beehive--this record has a weird magic anyway, but it's recorded like you're inside the instruments...totally amazing

    Ever heard In Utero?

They used enough mics on that record to pick up a dust mite farting on Dave Grohl's snare drum.

Time to fire up the streamer and give that a listen.

I've always appreciated Sylvian. He's one of those misfit oddballs who's always up to something interesting.

I've become so numb to that record over the years that I forgot about how cool it sounds. Need to revisit.

He's not for everybody but that's his masterpiece by a wide margin...it's quite different than his typical sound, really. En-yoy!

I just listened to it recently after like 15 years, and I forgot how great it is...I wound up playing it over and over for like a month

Listening now. It's beautiful and the sound is impeccable. There's nothing "1987" about it at all productionwise.

Ha Muddy Waters’ Folksinger album is the first thing I thought of when I read the title!

Maybe also Talk Talk’s Spirit of Eden and Laughing Stock?

The “strings only” mix of Eleanor Rigby (or even just listening to the remixed backing) gives the impression of the string players right there. Just the right amount of air and echo on all instruments.

I agree and I love Albini's sound but for most of his records, I'm thinking about how much of an Albini recording it is. I don't lose myself in his spaces because they're hyper-real.

For sure. A lot of their best sounding moments were the combination of killer mics/space and the gall to try something different like move the mics a little too close...

I came here to post Neil Young at Massey Hall and Muddy Waters Folk Singer, and I can see they’ve both got a few mentions already.

I’ll add Kind of Blue to the list as well then!

Muddy Waters "Folk Singer" is the one for me.

First time I heard it (on an MFSL Gold CD) I did, literally, feel like I was in the room.

Only recording I've ever felt so much in that manner.

The Rhino LP re-issues of Joni Mitchell's Blue and James Taylor's Sweet Baby James, which were both remastered by our host and Kevin Gray, bring Joni and James so close you could touch them. No other versions do that to me.

I dont like the way Joni sounds like a giant between the speakers. Lots of singer songwriter albums have this issue.

Metallic K.O., particularly since the distortion sounds like the hearing damage you would have gotten from the show.

Bill Evans - Sunday at the Vanguard and Waltz for Debbie will put you in the Vanguard. That recording is like a time and space machine.
Thelonious Monk Alone in San Francisco will put you in an empty Fugazi Hall
Arthur Blythe's Night Song will put you in the venue -- the First Unitarian Church in Berkeley
