Absolutely this, a wonderfully dark album. Honestly even if the rest of the songs were poppy cheesy love songs if it has Stagger Lee on it, it will make the list lol

If we’re talking about a feeling of hopeless claustrophobia I’d agree, Nico is like sunshine on a winter’s day. In which case I’d promote the Genesis sound as one of the most suffocating experiences I have found. Totally draining like the life force of the listener is being sucked out of them by a relentless rechargable Dyson vacuum cleaner.

But, then I get no clear idea from this thread what ‘dark’ actually means to people. For me it’s an abstraction referring to tonal colour which can be as enjoyable as anything.

There are some very different views emerging of what constitutes dark. If we're talking about an album that's difficult to listen to because it takes you to a place in your mind that you don't want to visit, I'll suggest Kaddish by Towering Inferno. Not a favourite of mine, but memorably impressive.

That’s an old one. It was huge when it came out. Crossed over all the popular high culture boundaries. I have no recollection today of what it even sounded like.

I don’t buy that. He used the “pig” reference all though that album (Hey piggy pig pig pig pig...) and in the Closer video. “Pig” is the word the Manson family painted in on the door of the house right before the murdered everyone. But why would he even try to deny it? Weird stuff.

Interesting to see Current 93 crop up a couple of times. Dark Folk is not a genre that aged well (at best you could describe it as culturally prescient) but I find the balance between beauty and the bleak in David Tibet's music both disconcerting and also compulsive. I have to be in the mood but it definitely takes you some place eerie. Though there is something about his voice that will always remind me of the drunk guy at Hammersmith Odeon who recites a poem in the middle of Zappa's "Yellow Snow" (YCDTOS Vol #1)

"The Moons At Your Door" is getting my vote though Sand's "Golem" would be in the mix.

I like that album, and I like extreme metal in general, but maybe I'm weird in the fact that up-tempo stuff never strikes me as "dark." "Heavy," yes, but up-tempo stuff just never comes across as "dark" to me.

Daughters "You Won't Get What You Want". I dare you to listen to it in a dark room, as loud as possible, with some mind altering substance. See how long you can hold on to your sanity.

  25. Planetary Suicide by Yuyoyuppe is probably the darkest albums I can (hardly) listen to.

The most best known song from the album is "Leia", sung by Megurine Luka:
