I'm not a big collector or swapper of gear. I think I owned a Garrard as my first decent table but really don't remember for sure. What I do remember was buying a Pioneer PL-12 in the mid-70's when I lived in San Francisco. Kept it until buying a Technics SL-QL1 in the early 80's. Still have that table as my primary but am waiting on a new Technics 1210GR. I owned a Marantz 6100 for a few years but it was too finicky speedwise and sold it to a fellow who repairs electronics for a living. I also have a Denon DP-23F which I bought a few years back just because it was cheap and a very decent table. It currently is on loan to one of my kids. That's my 50 year long turntable journey.

1966 - childs record player, I was 4, and loved playing records.
1972 - an all in one radio + turntable + speakers. The turntable folded up into the unit, and the speakers could be detached or attacched to the unit. Kind of an early boom box.
1976 - started getting serious, a BIC turntable.
    1983 - a sirect drive Sony turntable
1989 - met my future wife, she had a better stereo than me, I forget what kind of tuntable.
1996 - Rega Planar 3. This was a big step up in sound for me.
    1999 - Rega 12 - did not like it.
2002 - Clearaudio Solution. Still my turntable today.

I had/have a variety of record players, but that's not what this is about. Turntables only!
Pioneer PL-112D belt drive. Had it for many years until the bottom literally fell out of it. Replaced it with
Technics SL-1200MK11. Still use this as my main turntable. A few years ago, I purchased a vintage
Dual 1229 to use to play 78s (and the occasional 45 stack).

My first turntable was a Fisher that came with a cheapo all in one 80s stereo unit. I used that until cds became an option for me. Then I went decades barely using a turntable. Along the way I sold my vinyl. A few years ago I decided to give vinyl a try again. To make a long story shorter, I bought a couple of cheaper players that I returned and ended up with a Clearaudio Concept that is fabulous.

Had a BSR TT when i was single. Got married, and the music hobby was kicked to the curb.
Then I caught the "analog bug" again when my brother gave a me plasticky Kenwood. It sounded so much better than CDs...

Now I have these gathering dust in a garage cabinet:
    Thorens TD 165
    Sansui TT (belt-drive)
    (2) Lenco L70 (idler-drives)
    Empire 698
    Pioneer PL 12 (idler)

Last month, I gave myself a birthday present with a brand new ELAC MRC901 Miracord TT... still in the box (waiting for a proper set-up)...

    My history

Garrard SP25 Mk III gotta start somewhere, wish I still had it
Trio 1033 didnt realise it had a moving coil cartridge in it, so couldn't use it (I was young and knew nothing) :)
Luxman PD272 loved it for a couple of years, looked great
Pierre Lurne / SL5 HUGE leap forward but got frustrated with the arm deciding to lift off at random points...
Garrard 301 Enjoyed it lots, but new wife got upset with its looks
Nottingham Analogue Mentor Reference Enormous step backwards (for me at least) in sound quality, sold it within 3 months
Verdier Platine Now had it for 15 years. Wonderful Wonderful thing whcih has stood every arm and cartridge upgrade in that time...

Can't remember the first one I had as a kid, but it would of been a hand-me -down from my Dad, so it wasn't terrible. It was better than my mums at the time!

I then had some JVC direct drive turntable from the 80's, which still works and still at my parents house
First turntable I bought was a Systemdek IIX with a Moth Arm. Had this for over 20 years. One of the headshell cables broke on the arm, and it was impossible to replace.
Bought a Rega RP6 - it buzzed like a fridge. After a few days that went back for a...
Rega RP3 - had that about 2 years.
    Bought a 2nd hand Technics SL1200-MK2

By far the Technics is the best deck I've owned. You can do everything you need to with it, adjust the VTA, easily (well a bit) replace the cartridge with the detachable headshell.

Worst decks where the Regas. Just fussy, fairly frail and really overhyped for what they are. I'm sure they are good value under £350 but nothing past that. I could list a load of things I went through with those Regas, but no one will care because they get excellent reviews
