The deft touch of the director chosen to helm this epic really made it for me.

Earth Wind & Fire's song is pretty darn cool.

I had it on my ipad (Sgt Pepper I mean) and watched it in 20 minute chunks. I maybe got through three chunks then found other movies to watch instead.

Conversely, I did watch all of "All this and world war two" the same way (I think), wasn't too bad but essentially pointless, given that the soundtrack album existed.

Take that, Esther Williams and Busby Berkeley.:D
There is something insanely great about that sequence in a severely camp kind of way. I wonder what Susan Sontag thought about it.:)

Dunno about Sontag, but I'm sure Camille Paglia probably loves it out of sheer cussedness.

Yeah, EWF's "Got to Get You Into My Life" is one of the very few Beatles covers I like!

    It's probably my favorite, actually...

The most ridiculous bit about that final duel scene for me is the idea that this blues/gospel southern black crowd would ever cheer Vai's shredding. That's the true devil's work, right there.

Riff Randall - the squeeky cleanest "bad girl" ever.

    I love this scene.

Also, the bruddahs have a poster of Cherie Currie in their dressing room, and Darby Crash is in the crowd at the concert.

This movie is terrible. And awesome AF.

Thanks for that clip. The soundtrack went Gold - in Winnipeg?

It looks like Dr. Pepper also had some kind of deal for Can't Stop the Music since there are numerous times in the film where a Dr. Pepper can is prominently featured in the foreground. Boy, they sure did make some questionable marketing decisions around that time.

The reason I watched the film for the first time as a wee lad was because the HBO Guide listed that it had "brief nudity." Unfortunately for me, most of it wasn't the kind I was interested in except for a brief topless view of Valerie Perrine during the YMCA scene. Don't judge me. At that age, the possibility of seeing boobs was a driving force for me to watch a lot of films I wouldn't have seen otherwise. I definitely broadened my film education, even if it wasn't for the reasons that one normally seeks out new films. lol

Winnipeg loved the film, even when it flopped everywhere else. They have good taste. :)

The thinking must have been, "Nancy Walker was in a lot of Broadway Musicals and this script is written like a traditional 'Let's get a group together and put on a show!' Musical. I'm sure she'll do a great job!"

I watched Renaldo and Clara over the last 3 nights, I couldn't take more than an hour a night. After seeing Allen Ginsberg with his shirt off I felt even more sorry for kids who got caught up in the NAMBLA mess. What were Joan and Sara thinking by having anything to do with this? Roger McGuinn and Bob Neuwirth look ridiculous with eye makeup.

OTOH I love Bob's hat. Joan looked good dancing to Eight Miles High.

    Agree on Dirty Dancing.

I'm not hip nor current. But the new a Star is Born may qualify as a RNR movie. I've seen it. And it is not good.

Just a heads-up. The infamous Can't Stop the Music was just announced for a Blu-ray release by Shout Factory.

I had never heard GaGa’s voice before this (I had seen her breasts at a baseball game) and I watched only 1/2 of the movie for free on a very long flight. I couldn’t finish it...the 1937 version was in my mind.

    She has a wonderful voice.
