Nope - I recall seeing that in junior high school...horrific, and had no interest in horror movies after all.

I remember reading a column by Harlan Ellison, where he shared a story of being in a theater, nearly empty, only a young couple nearby. They were clearly doing more than making out, and the more traumatic points of the film seemed to have the most powerful effect on the young lady. His takeaway was, if that's what it take to get the girl going, there's something wrong going on inside her noggin.

I don't care if it's jump-scares, b-movie slashers or supernatural mayhem. Don't need it in my life, no thank you.

Hell house, Inc. - this one has truly surprised me. I thought it was gonna be just another "horror" of today's typical offerings but it was the scariest I've actually seen in the past couple of years. Recommended!

Yesterday was my mom's B-day so after my brother took us all out for dinner we came back to my place to watch her all time favorite film...Pumpkinhead.

Pumpkinhead is a great one. It is a revenge film, a monster movie and a slasher movie. I find the 3rd and 4th pretty good for straight to video movies.

I’d probably go with The Witch with subtitles (a must have).

For non-supernatural slasher type of horror, I’d go with a Korean film called I Saw the Devil or David Fincher’s Seven.

I just got the two-disc Kino version from the library. Looking forward to it. Also impressed by the Kino Phantom of the Opera. I don’t know if Phantom is my favorite, but it’s up there.

Wasn't expecting a thing from ' I Saw The Devil' and the fact it turned out to be a great movie was a total surprise.

Phantom, with Chaney, is a classic. Nosferatu too. I'd say add in Cabinet of Dr. Caligari and The Golem, along with a little Sci-fi with Metropolis - and you have 5 must-haves.

There will be others, but off the top of my head.

The Beyond, Italian films capture the dreamlike atmosphere of nightmares. The Beyond is a classic example of that.

Nightmare City. This film is bonkers from the start until it goes wildly off topic and then ends with a bang.

Deranged captured the grimy atmosphere of Ed Gein's life perfectly.

Dawn of the Dead balanced the whole "humans are the real enemy" with actual Zombies.

Suspiria. Story be damned, atmosphere is king.

Braindead (Dead Alive). If you are going do to gore, you might as well go over the top.

All classics, though I didn’t like The Golem that much the first time around. I should watch it again. A big problem I have with many silent films is that the best Blu-rays are region 2. I’ve considered getting an all-region player for that reason.

No wonder I didn't like it. I saw the 2002 Kino version, which presumably cannot hold candle to the 2020 Blu-ray version. See the Blu-ray (Kino vs MOC) screenshots here - The Golem Blu-ray - Paul Wegener I may have to buy the Blu-ray to fully appreciate the film.

EDIT - I really have to get a region free Blu-ray player. Those MOC Blu-rays always seem to win out in the Blu-ray comparisons (at least for silent movies).

I take it you mean the 80's versions?

Being an oldster, I grew up on the original films. The Blob is especially fun because it has Steve McQueen trying to play a teenager. :D

Scariest thing about 'The Blob' is its title song.
" It leaps, it creeps, beware of The Blob!"

the originals for me are usually the best as well, but on occasion a remake is just as good.

Do you - or anyone here, for that matter - have either or both Masters of Cinema Blu-rays of Nosferatu (2007 and 2013)? I'm intrigued by the 2013 version, which some don't seem to like as much as the relatively softer 2007 version. It reminds me of the debate about the remastering of old recordings (clearer but scratchy or harsh vs less detailed but softer or warmer). I'm thinking I might like the 2013 version that has better detail but shows more clearly the flaws in the version used for both the 2007 and 2013 versions. Here's the "trailer" for the 2013 version.
