His best studio efforts are well documented. If you're looking for a place to start, there are many options. Instead, I'll just state his live performances are on par with the studio efforts.

I would highly recommend the following:
    Rock n' Roll Animal
    Live in Italy
    Animal Serenade

The Blue Mask is the only one I have. It's pretty good. Nicely recorded guitars, and Fernando Saunders on bass.

Possibly the most well recorded electric guitar you'll ever hear.

I like a lot of them, but my faves are probably:

    Street Hassle
    The Blue Mask
    Legendary Hearts

And the live albums Take No Prisoners, Animal Serenade and the Metal Machine Trio's Creation of the Universe.

Lou and Queen might have worked when they were both doing the glam thing in the early-70s...But maybe not.

How about Lou Reed and KISS on Music from 'The Elder'? :D

Transformer - I have a US original Dyna-Flex copy and is awesome, visceral, like Lou is standing right in front of me. That's my favorite. I like it when everything is right, the music, the engineering, the mastering, the pressing...

Yet another Lou thread, I don't have the will power to resist & my preferences are in order...

1.Ecstasy...I have said it from day 1 of release that I believe as the years roll on "Ecstasy" will one day be heralded as LR greatest non-Velvets epitath...

It contains all the elements that set the Velvets apart from the rest ie., the sexual charged ballads, feedback distortion guitar workouts, straight from the dark side of street grit grime & perversion & lots more sex drugs & RocknRoll...

Its all on wonderful display on "Ecstasy" Lou's most perfect solo record - A+

2.Street Hassle...simply the greatest F--k You! in RocknRoll history & with Lou's reimagining of Carl Perkins "Dixie Fried"on "I Wanna Be Black" a lot of fun as well - A

3.The Blue Mask...the record that jumped started the 1980s Velvets-mania & a stone cold masterpiece at that...

Lou & Robert Quine forged a guitar sound that was as majestic as anything Neil Young has ever waxed & Lou's writing was anything but boring...

A powerful & dead on return to greatness - A+

4.Rock N Roll Animal...so what if there are better live Lou records & I didn't care that some passed it off as Lou trying to go A.O.R. it still fn rocked like a MFer - A

    5.New Sensations...Lou's happy record & one of his best also - A

6.Songs For Drella...a heartfelt & poignant farewell from the 2 Velvets alumni, has really aged well - A

7.New York... bittersweet tales of grand old New Yawk portrayed as only its 2nd son behind #1 Dion could do - A

8.Rock N Roll Diary 1967-1980...a fine overview of Lou's Velvet years along with his solo music on a nice 2 record set - A

9.Legendary Hearts...although Lou made the decision to mix Quine extremely low the record contains fine writing & stellar performances from all involved - A

10.Set The Twilight Reeling...only Lou could sing a song about egg cream & make it sound cool (sort of)

A nice blast of hard rock - B+

Guess mine aren't going to be radical choices:

    Transformer
    Berlin
    The Blue Mask
    New York

Really enjoyed Songs For Drella too, unless that counts as a Reed/Cale album.

The Blue Mask is arguably his masterpiece of the 80's. I view New York as more a part of his great 90's comeback, though it may have come out around 1989.

    Man, I really miss Lou.

Indeed should have happened. Ralph Stanley sings White Light / White Heat.

My favorites in no particular order:

    New Sensations
    Coney Island Baby
    Live in Italy
    Blue Mask
    Rock n Roll Animal
Walk on the Wild Side: The Best of Lou Reed

I at least like most of the rest and wish I hadn't gotten rid of some of the other LPs.

fmfxray373 Capitol LPs in the 70s were pretty good.

    Transformer
Animal Serenade (the vinyl was pretty cheap about a year ago get it while you can).
