That’s the list, right there. I’d only add New York.

never understood the love for TNP, too much talking and as much as i love lou not fond of these rants. i do like the 1/2 of mistrial and new sensations bit! maybe there was a great album between these two. the production kills them for me though.

However the sonic profile of the album might be described, it doesn't stop me enjoying it.

They probably would combine into one good album, the production is similar

Same here but it's still a botched production job.

The box set tracks were EQd and treated with a little reverb to achieve a more normal sound, which was a good effort. I wish they'd included more tracks. It seems the issue happened during the mixing as the single mixes don't have the issue, which makes me wish they'd release those digitally. I wonder if they still have the multitracks.

The EQ on the box set tracks was nicely done. It's the only CD I can say that about (though I don't have the Different Times comp). The old German CD creates a piercing sound from the guitars with the EQ they chose to brighten it and the 2000 remaster EQ is quite odd, imo. The best CD of the album is the 1st Japanese pressing but it's representative of the way the album originally sounded, which is quite dull/muffled. The hi-res remaster is similar in tonality to the 1st Japanese but too much bass and way too loudly mastered for me.

A strange cover for Lou, indeed. Going from memory, but I believe it's the only non-collaborative official Lou album to not have himself on the cover, aside from Take No Prisoners.

I bought ECSTASY when it was released on vinyl for RSD and realized I had forgotten how great it is, so it certainly is one of my favourites. But NEW YORK remain my number one.

Lou Reed has gotten a bad rap for a couple of things - both of which aren't true in my estimation. One is that he was never as good solo as with the Velvets, and the other is that his solo career is inconsistent, with too many dud LPs. Let's look at the first charge. Yes, all four of the Velvets records he made (and mostly wrote) from '67 - '70 are classics, but I would argue so are Transformer, Berlin, Rock 'n' Roll Animal (comprised mostly of VU tunes, it's true), Coney Island Baby, Street Hassle, The Blue Mask, Legendary Hearts, and New York. And if those albums aren't classic, they're at least considered great by many fans and critics. Also, Lou Reed, Lou Reed Live, The Bells, New Sensations, Songs for Drella, and Magic and Loss are all good efforts, and would be major LPs by other artists.
Which leads me to the second criticism, with so many worthy records, how can he be inconsistent? It's practically easier to name the weaker Lou albums than the good/great ones - which means he was indeed, very consistent for the first twenty five years of his professional career. How many artists can you say that about.

And I didn't even mention VU and 1969 Velvet Underground Live - both five-star LPs.
