ok, these are on the card and laminated (no particular order):
Children of Men
Could have been on the list on another day:
Terminator dark fate
20,000 Leagues Under the Sea
X- The Man With The X-Ray Eyes
The Man Who Fell To Earth
The Fly (1986)
It's really hard to say with only five. There are so many more.
Even forgot about The Thing and Predator… so, that would be my top 11,12
War Of The Worlds Original and Remake
The Amazing Colossal Man
War Of The Colossal Beast
and dozens and dozens more...
Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977)
Blade Runner (1982)
-- Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956): more horror/suspense than sci-fi
-- Planet of the Apes (1968)
-- The Empire Strikes Back (1980): more "fantasy / adventure" than sci-fi
-- Back To The Future (1985): more "comedy" than sci-fi
NOTE: I'm glad one (?) other poster mentioned Danny Boyle's Sunshine (2007). If we went only by the first 2/3 of that movie, it's likely my #1 sci-fi movie ever. Unfortunately, the final third is relatively disappointing. Still a 'must-see' if you haven't.
Planet of the Apes 68
Dark City (1998)
The Matrix (1999)
Total Recall (1990)/2001 A Space Odyssee/Blade Runner( final cut)
List always changing?!
Too many, but for now, I'll go for...
The Day the Earth Stood Still (original)
Bride of Frankenstein
Plus, you know...
Quatermas and the Pit
The Truman Show
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (original)
The Thing from Another World
The original Planet of the Apes
The Ice Pirates
I really love Fantastic Voyage. I like The Langoliers a lot until those special effects popped up. Even at the time of its TV premiere those effects were bad, but still a good movie.
Fantastic Voyage is great. And the novelization by Isaac Asimov is one of my top 3 favorite books.
Same with The Langoliers. I'm not a huge Stephen King fan, but this movie and novella are among my favorites. (The Rose Red miniseries is my other Stephen King favorite).
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
Never Let Me Go
The City Of Lost Children
Five Million Years To Earth
Children Of Men
FWIW on TCM
Tuesday, Forbidden Planet
Friday, No Blade of Grass
This afternoon my 5 favorite sci-fi movies were made before I was born:
The Day the Earth Stood Still - 1951
The Thing - 1952
Invaders From Mars - 1953
War of the Worlds - 1953
Forbidden Planet - 1956
Invasion of the Body Snatchers - 1956
5 is very hard to pin down
5 was difficult. Since others have included 6, I have as well.
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956)
The Hidden (1987)
Until the End of the World - Director's Cut (1991)
Event Horizon (1997)
Open Your Eyes (1997)
Dark City (1998)
It’s meant to be difficult.
Enemy Mine (1985) - I don't think this movie is traditionally considered great, but I watched it when I was a little kid and I loved it. And then I watched it years later as an adult and still found it good and relevant. So I would like to give it an honorable mention
The Empire Strikes Back
Star Trek 2 - Wrath of Khan
