This mornings choice is Young Americans in 5.1 on DVD. For the most part it's really good, the mix gives a fresh perspective on material you have already heard 100 times. The downside is some occasional overload on the echo effects, but it's worth it.
It ist underrated, yes. Probably because of its "plastic soul" image. Didn't seem terribly authentic, a very white Brit recording a soul album. Having said that, i like the album. Love his singing, the background vocals (Luther Vandross!) and I love David Sanbourn's sax.
Second run: Heathen, Lodger, Aladdin Sane. Terrific albums all. Had forgotten how good Lodger is. In betwwen I watched the videos from the latest album. Came to tears during Lazarus.
Agreed, the only weak leak is the cover of Across the Universe... Guess it had to include it as he was just starting out is friendship with Lennon.
Been working my way through his catalog all week...but today i'm listening to Lodger. I never really played this album much but, man...i think it's brilliant.
Yes, it was an all-Bowie-week for me too. Today it's all about Bowie live. After listening to Nassau '76 it is "Stage" now in the 2005 reconfiguration.
Fantastic Voyage is one of his very best songs. Plus it has D.J. and Look Back In Anger on it. What's not to like?
I'm trying my best not to cave in and go buy the Five Years vinyl set (budget constraints) My local record store has it new for $199.
Oh, I also played Bowie videos for my students in advisory period. Quite funny-one student said "Hey mister, this ["Blackstar"] is really disturbing! Take it off! It really bothers me but I can't stop watching it!" --> If Bowie, I'm sure he'd get a big grin to hear that comment
