Yes, his place in rock 'n roll is secure--as arguably the most important figure in rock 'n roll, if anyone is the most important figure. He has won an Oscar. He has won Grammy Awards. And now he is a finalist for a National Book Critics Circle Award. Bob Dylan is a role model for the ages. He works hard. His work ethic is to be admired. Congratulations, Bob.

Painting: I liked his self-portrait on his album "Self Portrait." The people on the Bizarro world noticed the resemblence right away.

Well, yeah, he doesn't have a voice for singing and he is not a very good musical composer, but his poetry is really good.

I'm sure there are a lot of things he can't do, but if this is a Dylan appreciation thread, I'm in!! :edthumbs:

...his voice is perfect for his songs, of which are well written and make great covers.

gottta disagree. If there is one thing for which Bob Dylan does not get enough recognition it is his song structure and melody. The fact that he can play multiple versions of most of his vast catalog is a testiment to his creativity.

Did you get that from Ian Tyson? That was his comment waaay back in the '60's. And it influenced him to get into the music biz... with Sylvia. :)

Sorry for the thread crap. On to our regularly scheduled thread....

Unlike, say, Gene Simmons? The correct answer, judging from "Don't Look Back" is "Humility", Dylan can't seem to do humility, or at he wasn't doing it circa 1965/66. On the other hand, there was this guy who came into my store almost daily, talking about poetry and how Rod McKuen (sp?) was a great poet so I recomended "Time Out Of Mind", with all its weird tales of old age and loss. After he bought the CD, the guy pretty much stopped bothering me.

I know a lot of people say Elvis was the most important American in rock. But personally my vote would go for Bob Dylan.
