I looked and looked. Everything I wanted I could get cheaper elsewhere. Not much at my local Barnes and nobles. :(

I got an e-mail because I'm a member of their 10% off club, but Lee posted the coupon.

John Coltrane - Fearless Leader box
    John Coltrane - Interplay box
John Coltrane - complete Impluse Studio Recordings box
    Ringo Starr - Liverpool 8
    Patti Smith - Twelve

There was more I wanted but they didn't stock them. My local store had no classical, rock or jazz SACD's and very few boxes. Bet they don't replace the stock they sold.

Well, I was lucky enough to be near a Barnes & Noble yesterday (I live 1 hour from the nearest one) and I had a one-year old $80 gift certificate that I all but forgot about.

So for free :D I got:

    U2 - The Joshua Tree Deluxe 2-cd $29.99
Led Zeppelin - The Song Remains the Same Deluxe 2-cd $24.99
KT Tunstall - Eye to the Telescope Deluxe Cd/Dvd $24.99
ELP - Brain Salad Surgery Deluxe $14.99
    Yael Naim - S/T $14.99
Rilo Kiley - More Adventurous $14.99

:goodie: ...and I still had $1 left on the gift card!

I know what you mean. I brought a list with me and they did not have a single thing that was on it. I was focusing on some of those CD titles that are currently going for around $18.99 and are never on sale.

What I ended up getting was actually kind of cool.

I am rather surprised that I have very little Beatles in my music collection. I love them. I respect them. But thanks to growing up with radio (the way it used to be), I never picked up on them as they were always on the radio and so many of their songs were more or less imprinted in my brain.

Well. This B&N had both the Red (1962-1966) and Blue (1967-1970) Compilations. And I never would have considered them under normal circumstances as they are far too expensive ($35.00 each) and the red one is more than a bit bit skimpy for a two CD set. But for 40% off...I figured what the hell.

So now after listening to all 4 discs in a row and absolutely loving each one, I'm now thinking ...you know...I really should have a copy of Revolver and Rubber Soul...and well...I really should have a copy of Abbey Road as well.

    You all know the drill....;)

But you know. Even if I don't buy anything else, I now have a really nice chunk of Beatles stuff that I did not have before.

And with the coupon, they was only around $20.00 apiece, a lot more reasonable than buying them at the regular price .

How could you get cheaper than 40% off? That's wholesale cost.

I bought Pure Genius: The Complete Atlantic Recordings (1952-1959) by Ray Charles. It was $85.....i always wanted it and it seemed like a better saving than a couple of cds which i can hunt down cheaper.
Probably the first thing i have bought from B&N in 5 years .

Not much to be had. Got the Assassains soundtrack (new cast recording; have the old one) and the Miles Davis Kind of Blue DualDisc (wanted to watch the making-of documentary).

Not much to pick from from my local B&N. No SACD's to speak of. I really wanted the Joshua Tree box set but it was out of stock. I picked up:

    Santana:Moonflower
Avishai Cohen: As Is... Live at the Blue Note

I wanted something they didn't have, so I asked them to order it if I could use the coupon when it came in, and they said "yeah, sure, fine."

B&N seem to sell a lot of their CDs ABOVE LIST PRICE in the brick-and-mortar stores.

Case in point: Merle Haggard's Legends of American Music: The Original Outlaw boxed set shows a list price on their website of $39.98, and an "online price" of $35.98. In the store it was marked $41.99.

It could be quite possible to find some of what I bought for cheaper thru Amazon Marketplace and other places.

Maybe I could have gotten stuff cheaper - but I did get:
    Rolling Stones SACDs for $10.25
Beatles Anthology 2 & 3 and at the BBC for $18.89 each
Dave Edmunds Anthology 2 cd for $15.11
and a bunch of single cds for prices from $4.31 to $8.63.

(I got the member 10% off then the coupon 40%)

I did pass on a bunch of cds that I thought were overpriced to begin with and didn't find any box sets that felt worth the price even after the discounts.

So, not bad deals, I think. (Until the bottom falls completely out of the cd retail market and they shovel them out for free! But then the selection won't be as good)

    Hmm.

I have been a member of B&N's 10% off club for years and I have never once received an email coupon.

    Curious.

Actually, I forgot that there were a couple of non-CD items on my receipt reflected in the total price.

Actual average price per CD was $6.65.

You still need to register for them in your account info section on their website, IIRC.

Bob Dylan - 2 Bootleg (sic) concerts: 1966 "Albert Hall" concert, 1975 Rolling Thunder Revue (came to Cambridge a couple weeks before my 15th birthday! No, I wasn't there.)
    Todd Rundgren - Something/Anything?
Cowboy Junkies - The Trinity Session
The Doors - Strange Parade, The Soft Parade, Waiting for the Sun, Morrison Hotel (all remixes)
Brian Eno - Here Come the Warm Jets (remaster)

Aside from the Doors and ELP, I had never owned any of these albums before. Total was about $130. Not shabby.

You should be able to sign in or register at the top of the home page at bn.com, right next to the B&N logo. Then you should be able to enter personal info, your membership number, and "Communication Preferences".

I'm sure a Customer Service kiosk at any of their stores can help if you show your membership card.

i can tell you with about !00% accuracy that i will never watch the DVD. i have quite a few DVD's that have come with CD's and i haven't watched a single one.

watching music on TV just does nothing for me, in fact i find it very boring.
