Van der Graaf Generator did just fine without a bassist!

(Special note: They did have a bassist early on, but he left and they never replaced him with Hugh Banton doing the bass work on keyboards.)

What do I think of The Doors? Not much! I will say that of this particular period, The Beatles, The Beach Boys, The Byrds, Cream and The Jimi Hendrix Experience are my favorites.

The Doors get big points for putting out an album as dark as S/T in 1967. The band were all great musicians and had a unique sound that hasn't been duplicated to this day. Jim was a great singer, but his alcohol problem was serious and hampered his work and the band's.

Probably sacrilege to Doors fanatics but I can listen to all of their songs except The End. That one is a bit too much but most of their other songs are great.

    Here are my 10 cents:
    • Their studio albums are all great, their live stuff not so much (live shows released after Morrison's death)
    • Absolutely Live is a near perfect live album capturing the band at their peak and including a number of unreleased songs instead of the usual compilation of hits
    • Jim Morrison's antics on and off stage derailed the band into an early abyss. They could have been the main attraction at Woodstock and carried on beyond LA Woman with at least a couple of blues albums (had Morrison lived).
    • Instead we got two of the worst albums ever, unlistenable in my opinion.
    • Some of my all time favorite songs are:
    • Break On Through, Soul Kitchen, People Are Strange, Spanish Caravan, Roadhouse Blues, You Make Me Real, Land Ho, Love Her Madly, LA Woman, Riders On The Storm, Who Do You Love, Love Hides, Build Me A Woman, Universal Mind, Break On Through #2
    • Timeless Stuff

    Thank you!

I will add that nothing in your post was redundant. They definitely made everything "their own" without sounding gimmicky. It's why I capitalized MUSIC, because it's usually overlooked in favor of gossip. I love "Jim Morrison talk" as long as it's truthful, and doesn't engage in the absurd or the unverifiable. What I'd give for another "lost" interview uploaded onto YouTube.

Very good band. I favor British music, but the Doors are among my top 5 or top 10 American bands of all time.

A great band and very unique.
So much so that nobody sounds like them, and those that try to emulate/imitate Jim's sound and lyrically styling are very obvious as well as sound cheesy.

They are a great combination of styles/genres, and each member brings adds atmosphere and dimension.

    Great music.

I love The Doors music and Jim's lyrics/vocals/sense of drama. Probably THE best U.S. rock band for what they achieved.

Jim Morrison's lyrics often sound pretentious to me. However he is one of my favorite male rock vocalists. Maybe not the best technical singer but he seemingly loved women and the natural characteristics of his voice enveloping the more romantic elements of his lyrics is unmatched imo. Seat this in some of The Doors beautifully crafted pop-song gems like Crystal Ship or more ethereal pieces like Indian Summer and you have gold. The keyboard sound can be irritating at times. I like it on the LA Woman album though. I like all their albums with Jim. I don't think I've heard the ones without him. A lot of good/great music there.

too bad there aren't enough previously un released, quality gems left over for an entire new album by The Doors.

They could call it Born in a Barn

    Here's a re-run from 2018:

Unique and influential L.A. band. Weird mix of styles (hard blues, light jazz, flamenco, wonky garage psych,
lounge singing, beat poetry) held together by Morrison's powerful voice and performance art showmanship.
The adolescent hormonal/angst lyrics have eternal appeal to 16-year-olds across the generations. "Lizard chic".

And to Jim’s credit, he was always willing to acknowledge what the others brought. Let’s not forget it was his idea to give all four members songwriting credits, and contrary the posthumous image, the band photos always placed him as one of four members-no more, no less.

You know it wouldn't be a shock,
