Anyone care to give a brief overview of things they've been giving their eartime to lately? Here's some of mine ...

Skylarking, XTC (remastered Japanese CD in LP-style sleeve). I may like this even better than the MFSL CD. Very full, pleasingly plump sound ... I don't know, my original Canadian vinyl still sounds best, methinks. But this is very good too.

Merry Christmas, Johnny Mathis (2-eye Columbia mono LP). 'Tis the season!!

Fly Like an Eagle, Steve Miller Band (DCC gold CD)

Wonder Wonder, Edith Frost (LP). Great recent album by a wonderful singer-songwriter. For mellow moods only.

American III: Solitary Man, Johnny Cash (LP). The Man in Black singing U2's "One," Tom Petty's "I Won't Back Down" (with Petty tagging along), Neil Diamond's "Solitary Man," plus a few nifty new tunes of his own. Great sound. (Now if only I could find his two previous American albums on vinyl ...)

The Doors catalog (Grundman remastered CDs). Thanks Patrick!

Who's Next, The Who (orig. US Decca LP and the "Hoffman" Canadian MCA CD)

With the Beatles, The Beatles (orig. UK Parlophone mono LP)

All Things Must Pass (orig. US Apple LP), Thirty-Three and a Third (Dark Horse LP) and Cloud Nine (Dark Horse LP), George Harrison

    Hi Jeff,

Think ya r high on Costello, right? If so, hows the Ryko Gold of "The Costello Show/King of America"? Is this the best version, if not what is?

    Hello,

Yes, I am definitely a huge Costello fan. (I should have included on my list an original UK LP of Armed Forces I got yesterday and listened to last night ... WOW is it sweet.)

King of America vies with Get Happy!! as my favorite Costello album. I have various versions: original Columbia CD, ordinary Ryko CD, gold Ryko CD, US LP, UK LP.

You may notice on the packaging of the Costello gold Rykos that the "Au20" label is nowhere to be seen. Instead they just say "Gold Remasters." And there's plenty of evidence to suggest that the gold Ryko of KOA is no different from the aluminum Ryko. There's the same mastering error, for starters (no 15-second gap between the main album and the bonus tracks, as there's supposed to be), in addition to the same shrill, incredibly over-bright sound.

I actually like the original Columbia CD better if yer talkin digital. But nothing I've heard sounds better to my ears than the US and UK LPs (which sound practically identical). They're rich and full and nicely balanced ... it's a recording that emphasizes the frequency extremes a bit to begin with, so the last thing it needed was the over-bright Ryko treatment. If you have a turntable, get a US LP for $1 somewhere (I see 'em all the time); if not, I'd say hunt down a Columbia CD or wait for the upcoming Rhino/Warner remaster.

I've just listened to the Ormandy conducted Nutcracker highlights recording on Columbia. I only have the cassette for now, as I don't claim to be a true "audiophile" but I like good sound (this is a great stereo experience, even on inferior formats), Ssgt. Barry Sadler's "Ballads of The Green Berets," some other Christmas music plus other stuff that I hadn't played in a while.

    Hi Jeff,

Thank ya for the killer detail on KOA. Just scored the Ryko Gold which is still sealed so I'll trade off & score an lp. More $ & better tunes, life should always b that way.

    Thanks again,
    Jeffrey

Lately, I've been listening to something old & something new:

Ronnie Earl-Healing Time-Last years release on Telarc. Real nice. Ronnie & Jimmy McGriff go well together.

Ray Charles-Greatest Hits Vol.1 & 2-Got these 2 DCC gems recently and am really enjoying Steve & Uncle Ray's handiwork.

John Coltrane-Blue Train & SRV-The Sky Is Crying-Got these 2 MOFI's last month as a wedding gift from my wife and haven't stopped listening to them. These's MOFI's just smoke the regular issues, esp. Blue Train, I never knew how really bad the Ultimate Blue Train was until I heard this. All I can say is WOW !

Merle Travis-Folk Songs From The Hills-I always enjoy listening to this every year between Thanksgiving & Xmas. Just a personal favorite from Bear Family.

Lots of new goodies coming out in Jan & Feb. New Blue Note reissues, Tull remasters I'm curious to hear, and if I'm lucky some more Miles Davis reissues.

    Happy Listening - ED

    Ed,

Does your MFSL "Blue Train" have a missing 1st note at the beginning of the CD?

Hmmmm, not that I notice. I don't have Ultimate Blue Train anymore (for good reason) to compare it to. I heard about this "quirk" though. Weird...

Dave, you mentioned that Skynyrd's Second Helping UD1 MOFI is the best so far. Do you notice a significant improvment over the MCA remaster ? I personally think that the MCA remaster isn't that great, but I've not heard the MOFI (UD1 or UD2), and would be curious to hear yours or anyone else's opinion on this one.

    Thanks ! -ED

If you haven't heard the STP 4 album, go get it! I think it's easily the best rock album of the last few years. It may be knew, but this thing falls into the classic hard rock realm - from Led Zep textures to the last track that sounds like Jim Morrison's been brought back from the grave.

    Ed,
I haven't heard the UD2 version but the 10 or so UD1 vs.UD2 that I have done there is absolutely no question that the UD1 is always better, sometimes extreme (Pink Floyd DSOTM) and sometimes not so extreme (Santana Abraxis). The MCA remaster is bush league compared to the MFSL which does have a very vinyl/breath of life sound to it.
Ed if you're as big a Skynyrd fan as I am, and also Gary on the forum here, you owe it to yourself to hear this version and I promise you won't be disappointed.

Bradley, if you're considering upgrading "Nutcracker" to CD, I'd like to recommend the version on Deutsche Grammophon 449 726-2 by the Berlin Philharmonic (conducted by Mstislav Rostropovich). Plus you'd also get the terrific "Swan Lake" and "Sleeping Beauty" ballet suites as well. [IMG]

Mikey, I picked up a copy of The Ventures "Christmas Album" this week. I love their version of "Sleigh Ride". Great album, interestingly enough mastered by Steve Hoffman.

    Ed,
I wish you lots of luck in your search for the UD1 version of Skynyrd as I had to buy it from a seller in Germany after an exhausting search in both the US. and Canada. I had to pay $40.00 US. for it but I'll tell ya Ed it was, is, and probably always will be worth every penny I spent on it, and besides the only place I've seen it other than Germany is on the dreaded ebay and it went for around $62.00 US. (ouch)!
