Huh. I'm surprised so many people choose "He Stopped Loving Her Today." I do like it, but I would not even call it the greatest George Jones song, much less the greatest Country song (to me, George's apex was "She Thinks I Still Care").

I'm not sure if I could pick a greatest country song of all time, but this one would be up there in contention if I was going to try:

It was the first song that crossed my mind.

That's the way I've always looked at it. When people talk about music they like, other people might look into it and find something new. When people complain about music they hate, it serves no useful purpose. No one is going to suddenly hate music they love just because some anonymous stranger pisses on it online.

Willie Nelson, Always On My Mind

I'm sure someone will whine that it's not a country song, but Willie is country. If he sings Eminem's "Rap God", it would be country. More importantly, Willie sings this song better than anyone.

This is the most ridiculous post I've seen regarding Dolly Parton's Jolene.

She's had more #1 & top 10 country hits than any other female country artist. She's a living legend. She's influenced many County stars including Reba and Carrie Underwood, who publicity have stated that many times.

Probably won’t end up being my all time favorite, but this is just a great choice imo!

It's either "He Stopped Loving Her Today" or "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry"

Sing Me Back Home by Grateful Dead on 8/27/72 in Veneta, OR. Go ahead crucify me. That's what it's all about. At least sing me away.

The one absolute about this thread is that there is no such thing as the greatest country song of all time
There are literally dozens of them
