Don't get me wrong...I loved them since way back in 1973. Saw them live six times, etc etc

However, most of their songs are amazing while some....make me cringe. Especially some Freddie tunes.

The worst on my list is "Love of my Life".

I know I know, a live favorite. To me, it just sounds corny and sappy. Especially the chorus with the "Bring it back" lyrics. Completely overblown production right down to the harp and layered guitars. The vocals..I won't even go there.

What is your choice of the most sappy Queen song...if any?

You're My Best Friend is as cheesy as it gets. Hardly ever listen to it

Its sappy in a different way, but I always found "Rock It (Prime Jive)" to be the most cringeworthy Queen song.

Good choice. I like the bass though.

That's a beautiful song to me as well - and Brian May's solo is just spectacular, in my book.

I always took "Love of My Life" as a campy song so it never offended me. "You're My Best Friend" is the first Queen song I really loved, so it's not sappy to me. "Rock It (Prime Jive)" is a great Roger Taylor song (my favorite Queen writer). Having said that, Taylor's "Radio Ga-Ga" , along with "I Want To Break Free", turned me off the band for about twenty years. In retrospect, I'd have to say that "The Works" as a whole was a little too sappy for me.

Oh no. I better get my guns loaded.

Another sappy corny bomb to me. Sorry.

"One Year Of Love" is the absolute sappiest most saccharine Queen song ever recorded. Nothing else compares. "Best Friend" and "Save Me" don't even come remotely close.

I don't know if sappy is the right word but 'You Take My Breath Away' is always a skip for me.

For me it's a tie-in between that and "Pain Is So Close To Pleasure". Even Freddie's lead vocals refuse to take the song seriously. Would've been a fine Supremes tune though.

Trust me...it is the right word for that song. Ugh. I skip it too.

Definitely not sappy. The vocals are kinda necessary to save it from being a bomb, I will admit.

If you're going digging on AKOM for "sappy", "Friends Will Be Friends" is an excellent place to start; an attempt at an anthem that falls a little short.

That song is a real sap happy groaner to me also but nothing beats when Freddie comes in with the "Bring it back, bring it back" on Love of my Life.
If I sang those lines to a lost love that way, I would probably get a loud laugh in return. :D

well there's your problem right there.

Only Freddie could make these songs even halfway passable; the only redeeming quality to "One Year of Love" is the fact that Freddie is singing his @$$ off on it, and even that's not quite enough to save it.

You are right...if you song those lines with a bad singing voice, it would be punishable by death.

    Nope. Never.

    "One Vision"
"A Kind Of Magic" (especially the Highlander end credits version...sorry John, but what fun!)
"Princes Of The Universe" (with the video for extra lulz)
and of course, the showstopper "Who Wants To Live Forever"

Yeah, it might have made a better EP alongside a full Highlander soundtrack, but when you have B-sides like "Friends Will Be Friends Will Be Friends" (the 12" extended version except missing about 20 seconds) and "A Kind Of 'A Kind Of Magic'" (the second half of the 12" extended version just slung out there by itself), it seems that Queen was an a bit of a "let's just throw it out there and move on" sort of mood when it comes to this album.

Of course, without A Kind Of Magic, you wouldn't have had this:

Worth the price of the rest of the record, no doubt.

'Delilah' from Innuendo about Freddies cat....! Seriously I think I probably love pretty much every Queen song they ever did - maybe one or two on 'The Miracle' and 'Innuendo' i'm not so keen on but all the others I kind of unconditionally love. I think it has something to do with getting into them at quite a young age and 'accepting' pretty much everything they ever did. Freddie could sing any old nonsense and I would still love it...

Hmmm, imo its a thin line between fey and sappy, you be the judge, lol...
a sweet one off one of my guiltiest musical pleasures, the Jazz album

    The Dreamers Ball
    (Brian May)

Oh I used to be your baby
Used to be your pride and joy
You used to take me dancing
    Just like any other boy
But now you've found another partner
And left me like a broken toy

Oh it's someone else you're takin'
    Someone else you're playin' to
    Honey though I'm aching
Know just what I have to do
If I can't have you when I'm wakin'
I'll go to sleep and dream I'm with you

Oh take me take me take me
    To the dreamer's ball
I'll be right on time and I'll dress so fine
You're gonna love me when you see me
    I won't have to worry
    Take me take me
Promise not to wake me 'till it's morning
    It's all been true

What you say about that hey honey?
You gonna take me to that dreamer's ball?
    I'd like that
    Right on down forty-second street
Way down down town dreamer's town

Oh take me take me take me
    I'm your plaything now
You make my life worthwhile with the slightest smile
Or destroy me with a barely perceptible whisper
Gently take me remember I'll be dreamin' of my baby
    At the dreamer's ball

    Take me hold me
    Remember what you told me
You'd meet me at the dreamer's ball
I'll meet you at the dreamer's ball

One of the greatest voices, frontmen, etc ever.
A huge dichotomy in his songs though IMO. I mean compare "Liar" to "Love of my Life". You can call it a broad range of style but it is extreme to me.

C'mon, there was no other way to mimic a cat's voice - cut the guy some slack, please!

And the song is not really one of my favorites.
