It would be Mulholland Drive for me and that came out 17 years ago. Wow, hard to believe it's that old, i still think of it as a newer film.

I’m not one of those folks who thinks newer movies are bad, there’s been a lot of really good movies in the last 5 to 10 years but none of them that I liked enough to end up being a favorite.

Don't really connect with most movies made today due to slick and vapid production, crappy acting, only models being cast, bad music, stylized storytelling, etc.

Latest one would have to be a japanimation one called Your Name released in 2016. Before that, probably The Departed (2006) and before that, Fellowship of the Ring (2001) and then we get into Shawshank Redemption territory (1993, I think).
  6. The Zodiac

    The Zodiac God's Lonely Man

There Will Be Blood went straight into my top 5.

Lots of excellent newer films, but my honest top 10 all time's newest film would be Alfonso Cuarón's Children of Men from 2006.

Here's the top 10 I posted in the "Favorite Movies" thread:

    01. Howl's Moving Castle (2004)
    02. Jerry Maguire (1996)
    03. Into the Wild (2007)
    04. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)
    05. Pride & Prejudice (2005)
    06. The Iron Giant (1999)
    07. Grease (1978)
    08. Say Anything... (1989)
    09. The Breakfast Club (1985)
    10. The Princess Bride (1987)

The newest film on there is Into the Wild from 2007. However, the oldest is Grease from only 1978. In contrast to many members on the forum, I have a hard time connecting with older films (let's say 1960s and before) and gravitate more towards the production values, acting style, scoring, etc. of the films of the '80s, '90s and the new century. I'm 30 years old.

(Most recent in a top 100, which I have not formally created, would be both Coco and Blade Runner 2049--both from last year, 2017.)

I used to have a hard time connecting with older films too. I avoided pretty much anything that was pre 70s. But eventually I ended up watching some of Hitchcok's films and some of the Noir classics of the 40s and 50s and it opened up a whole new world for me. Now i love old films.

I can never really nail down an unchanging top ten list, but I do have some that turn up on the list anytime I try to compile one. Oddly enough, none of those films were released after the mid-90's. I have no issue with modern films, but none of them seem to be mainstays on my list of favorites. American Psycho, Interstellar, and various films from the Lord of the Rings trilogy have turned up on my list at times, but none of those are permanent additions. The latest film I always consider to be part of my top ten is probably Pulp Fiction.

Probably The Shawshank Redemption or Schindler's List, although if I wrote out a thorough top ten, they might fall just outside. Plus both are great films that don't get many repeat viewings. It's difficult to consider the Lord Of The Rings films individually, plus I've only watched the extended editions since they came out, so possibly Fellowship.

I can state with pretty good certainty that Field Of Dreams is in my top ten. That was from 1989.

My oldest is Casablanca. Now there's a film that gets watched a lot in my house.

Oooh...! I remember thinking similarly coming out of the theater. Not often does a genre film (whatevuh that is), takes you out of the genre, and into something fresh.
  23. I realize that when I started thinking "latest", some of them are already old, so let's see. Any of these could be contenders for top 10 at any given time, so . . .

    Se7en 1995

    Snatch 2000

    Toy Story 1995

Chris Nolan's Batman movies, but especially Begins and Dark Knight, 2005 and 2008

    12 Monkeys 1995

    A Perfect World 1993

    The Big Lebowski 1998

    The Truman Show 1998

    Elephant 2003

    Falling Down 1993

    Fargo 1996

Let the Right One In 2008

    Moon 2009

    The Fisher King 1991

It looks like Moon is the latest, and, the thing is, I feel like there have been plenty of good movies lately, so perhaps I have just yet to connect with a more recent one in the way I have those listed above, all of which I've seen more than once. I enjoyed THE SHAPE OF WATER, for instance. HUGO I enjoyed quite a bit. Tarantino's films I like. Plus, my list might seem quite silly to some as I'd put AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON and THE HOWLING up near the top. They're not 2001 or Lawrence of Arabia, but I freakin' love 'em. So there's that. :D
