I don't know about the edit being bad but John bringing in a different guitar certainly makes it more readily apparent.
Someone please correct me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t take 1 used with handclaps overdubbed? Additionally, the count-in from take 9 was tacked on.
In another thread, I believe someone recently said that the edit in This Boy sounds worse in the stereo version. True?
They didn't play Strawberry Fields Forever the way the final master is presented either, but those edits definitely aren't mistakes Like I said earlier, the fact that there are two extra beats means that the edit was intentional, even if the idea for the edit was born from an accident. The most likely scenario is that they were editing together two mixes of the song, one edit ending with the complete note, and the other edit starting at the complete note, so that when the mix was played back the beat at the edit point was repeated. John probably liked the accident but decided to add another beat to make the edit work in a musical sense. If you listen to the three notes you'll find that the middle beat is actually mixed differently from the other two, not having the horns present in the right channel. So it was indeed spliced in from yet another mix, something would had to have happened purposefully, not a mistake.
Not to me. It's another example of his tasty playing. If it's a stumble, it feels great and stays in time. Dan
Not a Beatles track (but it would have been if they had made an album in 1970) is "Working Class Hero": that is the worst bad edit in the collective canon of The Beatles, isn't it? I'm sitting here thinking of how a possible Beatles version might sound, with Paul and George (even Ringo!) joining John on the chorus......
Yes, that's the one. Actually, the beginning of the break is maybe even worse for me as there's a loud edit "pop" immediately before the harp solo comes in. It's quite jarring on some versions of the song.
You mean that last chord without the ride cymbal beneath it in Roll Over Beethoven wasn't supposed to be done that way? I always assumed it was part of the song's charm. I wouldn't want to hear it any other way.
There was an issue with the equipment for sure. I can’t say whether it was pumch-ins or not but I believe Unsurpassed Masters has ‘Day Tripper’ with the mistakes intact. There are mechanical swooshing sounds that were removed before release. Almost like a “THWAP”. The producers of TV’s Batman may have been privy to the unaltered tapes
Well, you seem to be more invested in this than I am. There’s a difference between a mistake and something intentionally added, but I’m sure you know that. Also, I disagree with the always reliable Wiki that it was 2 beats. I actually only hear what I consider to be a splice error. Can we just agree to disagree?
Totally agreed. Plus, we're probably all Beatle fans on this thread! Hopefully there's no animosity or hurt feelings, because that is CERTAINLY NOT what I was going for. Just conversation and having a bit of fun.
Some of you do not seem to know what an edit is. The tape is actually cut and spliced to another piece.
