Queen - A Kind Of Magic (LP). Summer of 1986 in Heidelberg (Germany), what a wonderful time. Pet Shop Boys - Please (LP) a few days later.

I was 10 going on 11 when this came out. Shame it wasn't the edition of the series featuring Metal Guru and Rick Wakeman's missus on the front cover as it would have added an extra layer of irony to the fact that just a year and a bit later Yes were my favourite band.

This is the first record I bought with the wages of a working man in a full time job. Farringdon Records in Chancery Lane IIRC. June 1979.

Jagged Little Pill by Alanis Morisette, must have been late 1995 or early 1996 when I was about 11. Impressed some girls in my class who also liked her. Not really sure it was the right impression though.

Followed shortly thereafter by Spice Girls.

Rest assured, both are no longer part of my music collection, Be Here Now by Oasis, which I bought around 1998, still is.

Back then MTV was still a big thing and I just loved All Around the World.

Let it Be LP by the Beatles on release.

Dad had just bought our first stereo; he bought some of the standard classical 'demonstration' favourites (Swan Lake, 1812 Overture etc.).

I went Beatles and was devastated when they split up not long after.

Apparently I was the only kid out there not initially that interested in Beatles or Kiss records

With my own money it was Sparks - 'Kimono My House' on cassette in late May 1974 (I had received a cassette player for my birthday a few weeks earlier).

3 at the same time: Best of the Lovin' Spoonful, Best of the Animals and the Pickwick re-issue of some early recordings by Tom & Jerry/S&G with them next to a plane on the cover IIRC - for a total of about $5-$6... c. early 1967.

The Animals was one of my first LPs as well but it was a hand-me-down in the late '70s... still love it!

At the time, all of their catalog (on MGM) but The Best of LP was in the sub-$1 cutout bins.

Yeah, SD is scorching and great. So are Gish and Mellon Collie.
But their masterpiece? Siamese Dream takes it for me.

A little side-trivia: IMHO, Billy's best guitar solo is during "Mayonaise". "Drown" is a close 2nd. Even the 'alternate feedback' version of "Drown" on Gish (2011 remaster) is stunning.
Which of Billy's guitar solo(s) do you love? This question is for any Smashing Pumpkins fans here.

In 1970, with my very own money, Let It Be was my first LP purchase as well from Leopold's in Berkeley. I can't imagine it being bootlegged! It's so common and has been reissued over and over!
