I bought my first player a Magnavox and about 10 discs at the same time. I don't remember all but here are the ones I clearly recall

Pink Floyd - DSOTM - Harvest JPN
Pink Floyd - Meddle - Harvest JPN
Who - Who's Next - MCA pressed in Japan
    Alan Parsons - I Robot - MFSL
    CSN&Y - Deja VU

By the end of the first month I had about 50 titles and the first Sony Portable (which used either C or D cell batteries and weight about a 2 pounds in the battery case).

I remember it just like yesterday (which is to say not very well ) ;)

First CD - Rush "Moving Pictures"
First LP - The Passage "Degenerates"
    Dirst DVD-A - The Doors "L.A. Woman"
First SACD - Mike Oldfield "Tubular Bells"

More formats, more formats I need more formats ....

    All the best, Andrew

Dave, the Ryko's are *Great!* compared to the Virgin releases! Yeppers, the RCAs are the best there is in the digital realm.

My first CD? I think it was "The Ventures", "Walk don't Run", a GH CD. I did not own a CD player at the time, it was "surf" type music and it was a good price.

The Doors - The Doors (German Import)

Bruce Springsteen - Born to Run (Japan Import)

    Winter 1985.

The Doors disc still sounds great, Springsteen sounded horrible.

Mine was The Allman Brothers At Fillmore East, though I'm not exactly sure about the year--1989, maybe?

My first cd was King Crimson-ITCOTCK (issued by Polydor Germany 800030-2)around 1985. Rare cd before Virgin signed with EG.

Can't remember to be honest. I was late getting into CD, such was my love of vinyl that I didn't buy any CD's until 1992 or 1993!

CDs were very uncommon at the time here in venezuela and the store offered a first-generation (in 1986) Phillips player in a package with four CDs "of your choice". Choice was about twenty titles.

I got two Dire Straits and a Three-cornered hat.

Grateful Dead - For The Faithful (also known as Reckoning) on Pair Records.

At the same time I bought a cassette of Trouble Funk - Saturday Night Live From Washington DC. I'm not sure what happened to the cassette, but I recently found another copy in stock at cdnow! :) I don't think this will ever be released on cd. Infinite Zero released a couple Trouble Funk cd's, but the company is now out of business.

Great disc. Have you seen the special on TV about the making of the disc?

Then And Now...The Best Of The Monkees. I didn't actually get a player for another 8 months. It was an addition to my Monkees collection at the time.

How I eventually wound up buying a player is a looooong story that has only a bit to do with music, but the short of it is, it was a gift to myself during a long illness and so I could listen to the first four Beatles discs, which had just come out. A big Magnavox CD cassette combo boom box from Sears, actually one of the more reliable players I've ever had. Made great car tapes.

For me it was David Bowie's Fame and Fashion on RCA, followed quickly by Bob Seger's Stranger In Town, back in August 1986.

    was it that long ago?

Working in radio during the cd revolution brought a lot of freebies to the door, mostly top 40 stuff. But the first I actually paid money for was Tangerine Dream's Phaedra on Virgin. Still have it, pleased enough to not upgrade it. Sound wasn't that top notch, even had a few tape drop outs. It did lack the vinyl noise that sometimes rules albums with long quiet passages. Was never that impressed with the first American pressings but did like the Japanese vinyl copy I had. The really big purchase was the complete lineup of Searchers discs that PRT put out. Sounded like straight dubs from the same tapes used for the vinyl issues. Still have those too, never liked the sound of the MFSL pressings. Sounded like the same tired tapes only brighter.

    Best!

    Seedy I mean CD memories...

I bought my first player in March 1984. Yamaha CD-X1 for (gulp) a tad under $700!

Went to my local Music Plus (Glendale CA) and picked out three discs: Carpenters 69-73, Queen NEWS OF THE WORLD and RUMOURS (sure wish I had kept that one :-(

I was so thrilled to not hear any pops or scratches (I was not exactly an audiophile back then) that within a few months I hauled at least 400 LP's off to Rhino Records in Westwood to trade out for CD. I really thought I saw the light at the end of the tunnel! I won't break your hearts (or mine again) by telling you what I gave away that day. Snif!

S'ok. We all did the same thing.

My first was Journey "Escape" from CBS Japan. I still have it and it is STILL the only Journey CD I've heard that sounds like it came from the master tape.

My first two were Rush "Moving Pictures" (german Polygram) and Talking Heads "Little Creatures" (Sire Japan w/target label). I still have Little Creatures, but I sold my copy of "Moving Pictures" because "Tom Sawyer" was missing the 1st note. VERY annoying because the best part of the album is hearing the very 1st note of "Tom Sawyer". :)

The first CD I ever bought (at the old Music Plus store in Studio City, California) was Dire Straits "Brothers In Arms". I was surprised that it had longer versions of a few of the songs. I was not impressed by the sound quality however. :sigh:

Around March '86 I went all out and bought a Hitachi single disc player (yeah, money was no object!). Go to the local Record Bar to get one of those new-fangled discs and there was all these great choices of classical and jazz works. So I bought Hey-Hey-It's The Monkees! Still have it (on Platinum label, a German import I think).
