Wow. Great reminder of how much Dave Abbruzzese kicked ass.

At the time, artists did exactly what the tv studio/show director or producer said. Any deviation led to a bit of panic.

This always gets me, he had such a unique voice, even at the end of his career and life:

Good call on Bowie, Patti Smith, Talking Heads and especially Sinéad O’Connor, great performances all.

I can understand that. But that's an insiders viewpoint. The audience wouldn't have had any idea that anything was amiss. (At least I didn't when I watched it earlier today.)

Most memorable for me - Klaus Nomi - TVC 15, with Bowie.

There are some great choices already mention, one fun one I remember-'fun' being the key word-was during one of the Christmas Episodes Pavarotti and Vanessa Williams sang Adeste Fideles.

...man, what a shame the original band didn’t last much longer. Angelo and Chris’ vocals are like bread and butter. So good together! That band was like pure adrenaline!

Also, Westerberg's solo turn on the show where he did "Can't Hardly Wait" with the SNL horns:

My favourite Mick SNL musical performance is when he joined Peter Tosh for Don't Look Back.

And Josh Freese shouts 'Burt Reynolds!' during the pause.

They also did Knockin' on Mine. I saw them a couple of nights after this. That band was so good.

A cursory search of YouTube provides no results, but seeing The Philip Glass Ensemble perform Rubric in 1986 was stunning for this suburban boy. Very bold to give Glass time on a network.

U2 when they unleashed Beautiful Day in 2000, Bono screaming "all you need is love" at the end was just a part of the song forever to me

Been going through some old VHS tapes this holiday weekend. AS much as I love Neil '89 & Keef '88, my favorite just might be David Johansen (as Buster Poindexter) & Chrissie Hynde (in a short wedding dress!) covering Brook Benton & Dinah Washington's A Rockin' Good Way in 1986 (sorry, couldn't find a link). Puts a smile on my face, for sure!
