I remember buying Queensryche "Rage for Order" and taking it home. I synched up my LP of the same title and compared the sound quality...

I don't know what I expected to hear, but I was shocked and saddened to find that the LP sounded better. I guess it was a good lesson for me!

I think I'll go play my "Rage..." LP!

My first CD I bought is the Righteous Brothers Very Best Of...Unchained Melody from 1990. Despite the slight noise at the end of You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin' if you listen closely which is barely audible, this CD sounds excellent. The first CD I received as a gift is the Rhythm, Country & Blues CD. A Vol. 2 was talked about but never followed through, still Rhythm, Country & Blues is an interesting CD. It would make a nice vinyl release.

I bought my first two Cds together at Sam Goody in 1987.

They were "Please Please Me" by The Beatles and "The Compact Ventures". The Ventures disc was on Garland dist by DCC!!!

STILL two of my favcorite disks. The Beatles disk is Mono :((( but at least it isnt no -noised to death. The Ventures disk is just a JOY, start to finish. I mean, The Ventures doing Go Go versions of "Johnny Angel" and "Lipstick On Your Collar" cant be bad!!!

I got my first CD player, a Magnavox, as a gift from my father for my 15th birthday, in July 1987. It was the first CD player in our house, and everyone was excited.

I also got three CDs that day as gifts: The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper, Paul McCartney's Tug of War (the first available version, on Columbia), and Billy Joel's The Nylon Curtain. The next day I went out and bought two more: The Beatles' Revolver and Suzanne Vega's Solitude Standing (the "Luka" video on MTV cast its spell on me at the time). It wasn't long before my first CD rack, which held 25 discs, was overflowing ...

The first CD I ever bought was Jethro Tull - "Aqualung". I didn't have a player; I just wanted to check out those new shiny discs. I decided to wait until CD players got cheaper than $200.00. I had to wait two years for that to happen.

Got my first CD player, a Sony, for my 15th birthday in 1984.

First discs were Billy Joel's "Nylon Curtain" on CBS, Phil Collins' "Face Value" on Atlantic (German made gray label), Don Henley's "Building the Perfect Beast", and Vivaldi's Four Seasons on DG's Archiv label (more hiss and rumble on that lousy all-digital recording than any LP I've ever heard!). I also had a couple of jazz and classical samplers from Radio Shack.

I was the only person I knew who had a CD player. Spoiled!:D

Now I've gone full circle back to LPs. Hmmm.

My first player came with a coupon for X dollars to put towards CDs at a local store, so I picked up:

    Madonna S/T
Madonna - Like a Virgin (West German pressing)
    Madonna - True Blue
    Pet Shop Boys - Please
    Prince - Parade

I was really into Madonna at the time and the other two were a couple albums I had wanted to get anyway.

    The Beatles - Revolver
Jimi Hendrix - Are You Experienced? (European Version)
Emerson, Lake & Palmer - The Best of

And a Pioneer player, as I recall, all on the same day. Those three have all got just a light scratch or two, since 1987, not bad. I see other folks' cd's on a regular basis, and it always surprises me how beat up a several week old cd can get.

Before I had a player I picked up Grateful Dead - Shakedown Street and Buddy Holly - From The Original Master tapes. I bought them because all of a sudden the Japanese Abbey Road was gone, there were no Beatles available and I didn't want to miss any other titles.

I got a Sony CDP-101 (the first cd player out!) in either late 1983 or early '84.

I bought 2 cds that day (there wasn't that much to pick from!)

Star Wars - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (RSO - 2 cds)
    Rush - Moving Pictures

I also bought my first 2 CD's before I actually had the hardware to play them in. Had to wait about a year before I got play them, which was ok because I played their cassette versions to death: Zep's -Physical Graffiti and the MFSL of Moody's... "Days Of Future Passed"

My first two CD's were Duran Duran "Rio" and Hall and Oates "Big Bam Boom". I bought these at Musicland when they only had a tiny display area for CD's. There wasn't much to choose from at that time (1984-85), but I remember them stocking the original London pressing of "Aftermath".

My first CD was Dvorak's "New World Symphony" played by the Cleveland Orchestra conducted by George Szell. A mid price CD actually, the first CD in CBS's "Maestro" series (Anyone notice not only the "Maestro" series, but also RCA's "Papillon Collection" was mastered quite well and sometimes better sounding than the "Living Stereo" series which replaced it?*).

One of those moments I'll always remember. I thought I'd be blown away by the sound, but recall being a little underwhelmed at the time!

Anyhow, for me, my first digital moment was...

"Hounds of Love" by Kate Bush played on a basic, but very good, Denon CD player in June 1986.

    followed by...

"So" by Peter Gabriel and "Stop Making Sense" by Talking Heads...

I'm soon going to be taking delivery (next week I hope) of a Sony ns900v SACD/DVD player and my anticipation levels are rising again...

    :)
