Of course, you need to hear the complete original unedited version to get the full effect.

But they don't want to put everything on 1 big disc.
They want to use CD and charge top dollar for the set I should think.
What do those all encompassing XTC blu rays cost?

The XTC discs amazingly cost little more than the price of an average double CD. Wilson's similarly-extensive Jethro Tull projects cost around twice that.

You're quite right, unfortunately The Who are too much of a ready-made cash cow for Universal to take the option.

Have you heard the demo? It’s the lead cricket backed by a cricket machine.

Those last 18 cricket chirps really seal the deal. ;)

I wonder if Pete will come up with a few previously unheard/unknown (besides Ambition) era songs on the demos CD again?

Benn, if you choose the surround option for either the Tommy sacd, dvd-a, (or the blu iirc?) but use only a 2 channel l/r stereo connection from your player to your stereo recorder or amp, there are some fascinating 'hi-fidelity down-mixes to stereo' ;) that are well worth hearing. Lots of band instrumental 'mixes' emerge - same album takes of course but some beautiful stuff that 'sounds like new' due to hearing some of the songs very differently and sourced from the surround and not the 2 track mix. Sensation, AJ, 1921, and a few others, captured my attention.

I wonder how many audio tracks/channels Pete was using at the time of Tommy to record his demos?
Will we get the next series of boxes in 10 years time with demos in surround?

He often made a few bounces. But the bounces would have elements combined. A theoretical example might be:

    Tape 1:
    1 - guitar
    2 - drums (overdubbed)

    Tape 2:
    1 - guitar
    2 - drums + bass (overdubbed)

    Tape 3:
    1 - guitar + piano (overdubbed)
    2 - drums + bass

    Etc.

That is, the guitar and drums would exist on their own, but the piano and bass would only exist locked in with the guitar and drums respectively.

Did you get the email from Who world instructing you to "Reminisce by streaming Who’s Next (Deluxe Edition)"? :sigh:

The latest Porcupine Tree was announced almost that early. (Seven months, perhaps? Eight?)

I think as fans it drives us nuts for an official announcement that early and the need to wait so long.

On the other hand, it gives us a wonderfully long opportunity to critique it, be disappointed about it, tell the artist/label how they should do it, and generally work ourselves into a tizzy over it.

Gosh, I love music forums!!

Oh cool! We've now reached the inevitable point in any thread where I can mention/complain about the Small Faces' "Autumn Stone" deluxe edition.

Announced as 'coming soon' in 2013.
