I have the 60 gig pod full with about 8,000 tunes at 256k for the most part...some higher, some lower, some lossless, depends, all sounds great for something portable that fits in a pocket especially with the e3 headphones in my humble....

just got the IPOD shuffle for the gym (an early valentines day pressie from someone who loves me greatly apparently)...wow, does this thing sound really good as well. i had my doubts....last few rips include Panjaba MC, Bend it Like Beckham soundtrack, Joni Mitchell's Clouds, Jessye Normans Straus' Four last songs, Cesaria Evora remix album (very cool this), best of Sugarcubes, Sandinista highlights and some bryan ferry/roxy music tracks.

I just played some Tegan & Sara on my iPod. I picked up a pair of Sennheiser portable headphones (PX 200) today and they sound pretty good for their size, plus super lightweight. And they fold up for easy carrying. At home I use better headphones, but I wanted something good sounding I could throw in the backpack. I don't much like earbuds.

I agree with Chris on the file formats. My iPod has AAC files at 128, 192 and 320 kbps. Plus anything I really like I use Apple Lossless - great sound in a slightly smaller package.

I make tons of playlists with iTunes, then transfer them to the iPod. I like walking around with so much of my favorite stuff on one tiny device. There'd be several pages if I listed them all here.

60 gig? I thought it maxed out at 40.

my son bought a Shuffle last week. can't believe how much music comes out of something the size of a pack of gum these days!

The top of the line iPod Photo holds 60 gig. It also has a color screen. It's pretty cool if you can afford it :)
