The first real eye-opener (or l shall I say ear-opener) for me was a VPI turntable with Dynavector tonearm and Dynavector 17D2-MR as an assembled demo set. Moving from a Dual direct drive and Shure V15-Type 3 gave me so much more detail and dynamics, that I became forever hooked on high-end audio as a major interest in my life.

Then decades later, I was shocked by my first pair of Audio Note speakers, AN-E/Lexus-HE. They were not finicky about amplifier, so whatever associated equipment I heard with them, there was so much more "magic" than I had ever heard before, that I built an all AN system, and somehow (with great luck) became an AN dealer.

I have three, sorry. Nakamichi Dragon cassette deck, engineering marvel. McIntosh C29 preamp and MC2105 amp, all day all night listenable. I have tube stuff I could name but these three bring a lot of happiness.

    For sheer performance:

    Spendor SP2/3R2s:
supremely musical, will never part with them.

    Cayin A88T tube amp:
Dead quiet backgrounds and just a great all-rounder. Sounds good with any speakers. 12 years old and still going strong.

    Best bang for the buck:

JMR Bliss Silver speakers bought pre-owned

    Yamaha A-S500 bought for $250

Other than the gear I have now... there are two things that got away and I often think about reacquiring:

    1. McIntosh MX110Z preamplifier. Beautiful sound, beautiful look; does it all and does it well.
    2. Bogen B61/Lenco 70 record player. Found it in NIB condition. Loved the idler drive and the styling.

Add a power amp and a pair of Snells to that and you’ve got a forever system.

Best for sound? Aleph J amplifier and VPI Aries 1 turntable

Best for longevity in various systems? Dual CS5000 turntable and a Pioneer V 7400 DVD player (which is used for CDs).

My first two serious pieces of gear and I love both. About to go through the process of getting them both serviced and getting the tuner aligned in the 110z, so I'm sure it'll only get better from here. Now to let enough time pass to get a turntable and speakers to do them justice.
