Echoes is the masterpiece they were working towards in the post-Syd era. I also like One of these Days, Fearless and Pillow of Winds.

I love all of Meddle, Seamus included for it's humor. Top 3 album for me. Lighthearted, meditative, epic

  3. Across The Universe... ...also helped inspire Pink Floyd's 1971 track Echoes (whose lyrics can happily be sung to the melody of Across the Universe)

Roger Waters even tweaked Lennon's line "inciting and inviting me" to "inviting and inciting me".

...Nothing (aka Echoes) (lyrics by Roger Waters)

    ...
    Strangers passing in the street
By chance, two separate glances meet
And I am you and what I see is me
And do I take you by the hand
And lead you through the land
And help me understand the best I can?
    ...
    Cloudless everyday
You fall upon my waking eyes
Inviting and inciting me to rise
And through the window in the wall
Come streaming in on sunlight wings
A million bright ambassadors of morning

And no one sings me lullabies
And no one makes me close my eyes
So I throw the windows wide
And call to you across the sky

Across The Universe (...Nothing) (lyrics by John Lennon)

    ...
    ...Nothing's gonna change my world...

Sounds of laughter shades of earth
Are ringing through my open views
    Inciting and inviting me
    Limitless undying love
Which shines around me like a million suns
It calls me on and on across the universe
    ...

Still, I bet it all fell apart round about the whale noises. I presume it's a sperm whale?

I’d never thought of the comparison between “Pillow” and “Comin Back to Me” —- but that makes sense to me.

Free Four is way more serious than San Tropez or Bidin My Time. It’s one of the first songs that really pointed towards many of Roger’s future themes (eg, record industry, the war, father etc.).

“But you are the angel of death,
And I am the dead man’s son,
He was buried like a mole in a fox-hole,
And everyone’s still on the run...”

I think one of the most beautiful Pink Floyd moments is when One Of These Days blends into A Pillow Of Winds.

    And then Fearless drops in.

A little trilogy span across 3 albuns and that took more than 10 years to conclude. That's the greatest PF epic. :D

Now, more serious. Echoes is enough to make Meddle a great album, and still there is OOTD and the other songs are acceptable enough at least.
I like the way the album starts so agressive and slowly turns more and more relaxed until side A finishes. And then... Ping... ping... ping...

Pretty much; yeah. Though that's still more than half the album.

Elsewhere, I think Pillow of Winds and Fearless work well enough as better attempts at the same kinds of things the band tried on Atom Heart Mother, but no - not classic songs or anything. Listening to the guitar being plucked on Pillow of Winds is a nice audiophile-ish kind of experience, though.

  12. I think we can all agree that the 'big deal' with Meddle is Side 2 & the psychedelic prog-rock masterpiece that is 'Echoes'. It isn't really any more complicated than that IMHO...

other than Seamus it's a fantastic album, and my favorite Floyd album just because of how great the rest of it is. and even then Seamus is still pretty cool, i dig it, but not as much as the rest of the album.

Gives a 50 year old classic loved by millions a listen spread out over the course of an afternoon and dismisses it while asking everyone what the big deal is...the thnkgreen way. Were you doing dishes and "listening" from an adjacent room?

    Super excellent album.

I got a kick out of this - even if I don’t agree with it. My point - not everyone loves Pink Floyd, especially all of their albums.

Does it really take drugs to appreciate an album? I’m having no trouble absorbing Jethro Tull albums I’ve never heard before.

"of course dude!....you gotta take some acid...do some shrooms....you gotta trip balls man!
otherwise you just won't get it................man!!!"

that's just my impression of the druggies that suggest you have to indulge in crap like that in order to like or "get" an album....:thumbsdow

  21. Lest we forget Meddle's highest US chart position was #70. (it was #3 in UK, the previous album Atom Heart Mother was #55 in US/#1 in UK)

Pink Floyd had all of it's albums in the UK top 10, in the US only 1 album made it into the top 50 (Obscured by Clouds) before the album.

Yeah really. Especially a drug like LSD. Kind of amazing that swearing is absolutely forbidden here, but its a-ok for people to recommend the use of illegal substances.

Don't you feel a complete sense of shame just linking to that? I feel I need to do some kind of penance just giving it a click. By all means dislike Pink Floyd if you must, but don't make arguments and construct sentences like a 3 year old whilst decrying the music choices of college students.
