Are there any bands that you acknowledge aren't very talented, but you still enjoy listening to them anyway? Not necessarily a guilty pleasure (but that can apply too), but a sober, objective assessment of a band's capabilities.

My choice would be John's Children.

    Marc Bolan with Johns Children

This is going to be controversial, but...

And yes, I know they were talented in their own ways...

Beat Happening, though I'd say they're talented, just not virtuoso musicians.

And Peter was too. In fact they all had plenty of natural talent. Mickey was a great natural frontman and he did learn to play drums well enough to record a remarkable album(despite him really but you have to at least applaud the effort). Davy was a fine singer and excellent dancer.

They were two musicians and two actors weren't they?

I can think of worse. John's Children without Marc Bolan!

Yeah I know they were all musicians and Micky played the guitar for real, and Davy played drums for real, and Peter played guitar better than Michael Nesmith, and the only reason they didnt want Davy to play drums is because he was the "cute one" and they wanted him up front, and Peter wrote the closing theme for the TV shows second season, blah blah blah.

Guys didn't have knowledge to compose music, they just wanted to do stuff with electronics - and their early albums have so much passion I don't really give a damn. The self titled could likely be covered by any proper musician in day if they felt like it, on a note for note basis.

Yeah, I just posted that picture link. It populated 'Marc Bolan' in the link for some reason - I didn't write his name.

But yes, I agree they were much worse before and after Bolan's short stint with the band (BUT I still like them!).

Mickey's voice was their not so secret weapon. A thing of beauty to be enjoyed forever.

I think the Human League qualify here too. Dare is a phenomenal pop record, genuinely all killer no filler. I seem to remember reading theit travails in attempting to follow it up and you wonder how Dare was even vaguely possible givem their lack of musical smarts.

    The Beatles? :D

I honestly have no idea. In terms of raw talent, maybe Spice Girls?

Other than Mel C, none of them have great voices - though I think Mel B and Emma have pretty good voices.

They were a "whole = more than the sum of its parts" group - they just gelled in a way the worked...

I love the Monkees, but it's true to say that half the band (Davy and Micky) didn't even consider themselves to be a band. Just playing parts in a TV series.

It's even more strange that the most musically talented one was as a guitarist! Jo Callis, who'd previously been in The Rezillos. He was a good pop songwriter.

Yeah, the Monkees themselves said the network hired them as actors not musicians. But the network did hope something musical would come from them.
