I know it turned into an homage to big silent film comedy at the end but… It was kind of a weird comedy. Bogdanovich went off the rails after paper Moon. Two perfect movies and then… What?
I watch this movie at least once a year. Even if it is just a remake of Bringing up Baby, it has a lot of great dialogue and comedy sequences.
It's a favourite of mine. Many of the lines are so quickly delivered that you have to watch it again. Then there are the many double takes from the actors - just the physical reactions are funny. I won't give anything more away, but in the movie, Barbra's character is driving Ryan crazy. I think the following exchange is mostly accurate. Barbra : 'From now on, I'm going to be the same.' Ryan : 'The same as what ?' Barbra : 'The same as people who aren't different.' Just typing it doesn't give a true reflection of the way these lines are delivered. I'd only recommend you watch it. Have a couple of drinks first...
It’s a terrific movie and one of Peter’s top films. Below “The Last Picture Show” along with “Paper Moon” and “Saint Jack”.
I didn't realize that Ryan O'Neil's brother, Kevin, is in this movie. He was the bike rider who delivered groceries.
I read where Ryan tried to pick up his own daughter at Farrah Fawcett funeral. To his credit he didn't recognize her lol He has a strange history. I remember him on the Larry Sanders show funny stuff
Yup. Frankly, hotter than hell imo. On the piano...meow! One of the funniest American comedies, ever.
I thought the movie was hilarious when I saw it at a theater during its original run. I watched it years later and didn't find it funny at all. Maybe I should try again.
A screwy screwball comedy. Streisand never really showed that comedic side again. That’s unfortunate. There are hints of her wonderful humor in her book.
Peter Bogdanovich has said that Barbra fought him all the way, insisting that what he had her do was not funny. Only when they had the first preview did she finally admit that maybe the movie was good after all... and I think everybody was surprised when it did pretty well (cost $4M, made $66M, which was a monster hit in 1972). I think when Bogdanovich reminded her at the preview she thought the movie should tank, there was this kind of reaction...
Love this movie! Hysterical stuff. To me this would be a perfect double feature with Chevy Chase/Goldie Hawn Foul Play.
I'd highly recommend the season of the You Must Remember This podcast devoted to the career of Polly Platt. She was Bogdanovich's wife and collaborator - credited as production designer, and clearly a huge influence on his good movies. Her career after they split up is fascinating, too. My 4k Criterion of The Last Picture Show is supposed to show up in the mail today!
Ryan on the the Larry Sanders show. Hilarious. Farrah wrecks Rosie's car. Ryan says she is Irish and she will kick your ass. Farrah says you are Irish and you never could. Larry Sanders funniest show ever.
A favorite of mine. I prefer it to "Bringing Up Baby. " Makes a great 70s double bill wuth "The In-Laws."
