Goldner owned Gee Records, the label for which Lymon recorded, and helped himself to writing credits on many of his artist roster's material, in order to collect royalties and buoy a gambling habit that frequently landed him in hot water with certain New York families. When Ross's cover became a big hit, Lymon's widows (four of them, from none of whom he'd ever obtained a divorce) wanted a long overdue payday and started litigation that eventually led to the exposure of Goldner's racket, as well as that of Morris Levy, another underworld figure whose Roulette Records had swallowed up Goldner's Gee label.
