Kind of shocked that we've gone five pages, and no one has mentioned Flight of the Conchords. Their songs are hilarious and amazingly clever.

Here are two of my favorites:

Flight of the Conchords Ep 3 Hiphopopotamus vs. Rhymenoceros

Favorite line (in "Hiphopopotamus vs. Rhymenoceros"): "I'm the Hiphopopotamus; my lyrics are bottomless... (clears thoat, followed by a full measure of complete silence). Classic.

One of my favorite "deep cut" music movies is Times Square. It has one of the most incredible soundtracks ever made for late 1970's new wave and glam. It's practically era defining. But it's a testament to the talent involved that the two original songs by actress Robin Johnson ("Damn Dog" and "Your Daughter Is One" are almost as good as some of the established classics of the era.

    Robin Johnson - Damn Dog

And another fun cult classic - and an incredibly silly one - is the John Cusack, Tim Robbins comedy Tapeheads. In it, two security guards try to reunite their favorite '60's soul band, The Swanky Modes. Originally, I believe, John Cusack's dream was to reunite the actual duo Sam & Dave. Sadly, acrimony between the two singers was too deep, and that never happened. Instead, they got Sam Moore and Junior Walker, which was still pretty awesome. Again, an extremely silly movie, but with a killer soundtrack provided by Moore & Walker. Worth seeking out for fans of the era.

"Disco Jesus" a George Harrison song from the Beatles comeback album in the great fictional book PAPERBACK WRITER.
    A sample of the lyrics:
    "It's Saturday Night/And I'm feeling bored
Cant' wait till Sunday morning/Get to bump with the Lord
    Yeah Jesus get down
When It comes to boogie he's the boss
Can't wait to do the hustle
Up there on that funky cross"

Bit of a soft spot for the film Music and Lyrics with Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore with its 'Pop goes my heart' - brilliant 80s pastiche!

I love when Elizabeth Montgomery dons her Serena outfit and sings "I'll Blow You A Kiss In the Wind", but I just realized Boyce & Hart released it as a single before that show aired. So my favorite piece of of fictional music is Kramer as the pimp.
