The Last Samurai ( 2003). His best performance in Magnolia. Other notable films...Tropic Thunder, Minority Report, Edge Of Tomorrow, American Made...Interview With A Vampire.
I have seen nearly all of his movies and will say Jerry Maguire followed by Vanilla Sky then Rain man.
Top Gun is my favorite. I also owned Vanilla Sky and watched it 5 times. I love quoting that one. "Every passing moment is another chance to turn it all around."
I wouldn't say I am a Tom Cruise fan per se, but I do like some of his movies a lot. A Few Good Men is easily the best of the ones I've seen, and Top Gun of course is good 80's fun. And even though it is fairly corny, I like Cocktail a lot as well. I've still never seen Jerry Maguire.
“Vanilla Sky” is probably my favorite. He was great in “Risky Business” too. I have a soft spot for “All the Right Moves.” His movies over the last 10-15 years haven't appealed to me much.
So something like "Tropic Thunder" or "Magnolia" probably wouldn't count, eh? Jeez, I don't know. I like Cruise as actor, but no movie really stands out as a "favorite". Probably "Jerry Maguire" I guess. I, too, like "All the Right Moves" a lot. I liked "Valkyrie" (even though he was kind of miscast). I thought "Top Gun" was abominable. "Knight and Day" and the second "Jack Reacher" remain the two worst things I've seen him in. Cruise movies I've never seen: All the "Mission: Impossible" films. I've never even seen five minutes of one of them. Any of them any good? "Vanilla Sky" Hm, looking at his filmography, it appears there's quite a few I haven't seen. Never mind.
Risky Business & The Color of Money here. Cocktail ain't bad either. Top Gun is re-watchable as parody. I don't consider The Outsiders his vehicle at all.
I like the Mission Impossible movies but they are just eye candy for the 2.5 hours and largely forgettable after the first viewing. The TV series had an ensemble cast and the actors all had a crucial role but with these movies it is all Tom Cruise but that is predictable. For this genre the Bourne movies are miles better. Jack Reacher is where he essentially play the same guy but with a bit more smirking. Knight and Day was just annoying. Brad Pitt pulled off the same movie but not Cruise. Smugness and little charisma. The Last Samurai was OK but the storyline is so tired practically another Elvis movie where he was the race car driver and now a swordsman. Did he produce it as well? He actually showed some good acting chops in Vanilla Sky and Jerry Maguire so these are my picks.
Agree on Jack Reacher 2 & Top Gun. But he’s done loads of good ones. But..as my opening post said “Any fans ?” Never mind.
I'm not a hater. I said I liked him; I just don't have a particular favorite movie. I guess you're taking umbrage with me mentioning movies I didn't like? In my defense, I didn't just come in and say, "HE SUCKS!". Anyway, point taken. Only positive remarks are accepted. Got it.
Maybe his MI: Ghost Protocol and that franchise in general. I like a lot of his latter work over the early stuff.
There is a few TC haters here btw. Guess fan boy stuff ( my thread )makes a change. Though I always welcome constructive criticism.
Again, NOT a hater; I think my post made that quite clear. I know better than to threadcrap around here. It doesn't go over well.
Threadcrap? Standard normal round here. Pity either the thread gets locked, or offender suspended. Not good either way. What did you think of “American Made”?
I will say that the M:I franchise is that rare series that (so far) gets better as it goes along: The Rotten Tomatoes scores for the six movies are 63%-57%-70%-93%-93%-97%.
I like Tom in almost everything because he's always "Tom Cruise--movie star". He's kind of an old-fashioned reliable movie star, always gives 100%, kind of a better version of John Travolta.
