I think I first heard it used in Q Magazine in the 80s, although John called him by it in the 60s.

It probably dates back to his childhood.

I like "Macca"....I first became aware of the nickname probably through Give My Regards To Broad Street, where it was used in the dialogue.

I wonder how much he likes being called "Macca" ? I bet there's only a handful of people who he accepts saying it to his face.....

I have no way of knowing this, but I expect that Ringo prefers that his friends call him Ritchie (as long as they really are friends)

For me, i wouldnt have wanted to be called Ringo after Beatlemania. I think its a dumb name

I hate the name 'Macca'. I'm far too adult and grown up to use nicknames. Nicknames are for babies and I'm not a baby. No. I promise. I'm all growed up and mature. I even refer to my best friends by their full names because I'm not a child anymore. Nope. Not me. I'm definitely a mature and serious person.

I'm just relieved that this thread isn't titled "Why is everybody always so negative about McCartney being called Macca???"

Thank you. Your insights into The Beatles is always fascinating and always a pleasure to read.

Since I'm not a contemporary from Liverpool or Merseyside, a friend of Paul's, nor was I ever in the inner circle of The Beatles, he'll always be McCartney to me.

That's a nice way of saying I can't stand it when most people call him Macca.

According to several bios, including Lewisohn, he's always been Ritchie Starkey to friends and family.

Personally, I hate it when people call me by a shortened version of my first name, but I accept that there are always people who will call me that even when I've asked them not to. On the other hand, I used to date a girl who hated being called Elizabeth instead of Liz. Everybody's got preferences.

And John's 'group' in the Stones' Rock And Roll Circus was 'The Dirty Macs.' I always thought that was a bit of a dig.

In Liverpool they don't just shorten people's names, they do it with other words too.

For example, cigarette is "ciggy", electricity is "the leccy", Christmas is "Crimbo", presents are "pressies" etc. etc. God it's annoying

    Tracksuit: 'tracky'.

    Definitely: 'deffo'.

It's not annoying for me, it's a nice playful approach to language. It's better than mancs and things like 'sun-shiiiiiiine'!

  16. Boy, that's just the nick name a ego maniac like him needs. By the way, "Macca" reminds me of a Cinnabon. Mmmmm...
