The Where Are They Now? submission for the day - Walter Egan (Magnet & Steel) - Whatever happened to this guy? (edit) - I should have known! www.walteregan.com (just updated last month)
You folks remember a guy named Soloman Feldthouse? He used to be in Kaleidoscope, a 60's band from L. A. He's now an electrical contractor. To make a long story short, our paths crossed and he was quite blown away (and genuinely touched) that anyone remembered him or his old band. Jim "Bone" W.
Walter was here in Maine a few years ago and played a show with a friend. I interviewed them both on my radio show (lots of cool stories about the California scene of the late 70's). Walter invited me to sit in with the band that night. I got to play "Magnet And Steel" with the guy who did it! Just before the solo, Walter leaned over and said "you're playing the solo tonight". Luckily, it's an easy one and I practiced earlier in the day. It was a great night for me and a very special memory. Walter Egan is a class act and a true gentlemen!
I almost named Soloman in that greatest rock vocalist thread awhile back. Kaleidoscope was IMO the most overlooked band of the 60's.
Playing with Elton! From Nigel's website "Nigel will be going into the studio with Elton in January to record a new studio album. "
Walter Egan Walter has a DC connection. Waaaay back in the day he used to be in a band called Sageworth and Drums that gigged around Washington. More recently he had a group called Brooklyn Cowboys that was cool. I believe former NRPS pedal player Buddy Cage was in that band Best- Norm
Nigel Olsson also played on the elton John "Live By Request" show last year. I actually have 3 solo vinyl LP's that Nigel put out many years ago!
Re: Re: Where Are They Now? Thread Cool story! So you got to do your best "Duane Eddy", huh? That is an easy solo but one that sounds great with that song, simple but very effective.
Re: Re: Re: Where Are They Now? Thread Yes, it was an easy solo to pull off (thank God--just the vocal melody--not too tough to play!) We also played "Ain't That A Shame", "Sunshine Of Your Love", "Back In The U.S.S.R." and "You Can't Do That". I wish I had thought to pop a cassette into the deck off the sound board but, sadly, I didn't think of it until we finished. Maybe it's best that I don't have a tape of it! My memory tells me we sounded great! I would hate to proven otherwise.
This was posted recently on the David Lindley mailing list: "Speaking of Kaleidoscope, Evangeline Records in the UK is putting together a 3-CD Kaleidoscope collection for January release, titled "Pulsating Dream." It will contain all 4 of the Epic albums, the singles, & the stray unreleased tracks that appeared on the "Egyptian Candy" compilation some time ago.Should be a handy collection." ...but I don't see anything listed at the Evangeline Records web page.
Supposedly, the singer of Survivor (the band, not the show) is the singer on all those whacky, deep-voiced, Budweiser commercials on the radio (i.e. "Taco Salad inventor" etc.).
Anyone know what happened to Bob Burns? He was Lynyrd Skynyrd's first (really, second) drummer. He was burned out, trained Armitus Pyle and left. Hope he is OK.
Seeing Breakfast Club's video for their Beatles cover of "Drive My Car" on VH1 Classic the other day made me wonder what happened to Stephen Bray, producer and ex- of Madonna? I thought I read somewhere that he died.
Good question. I did a search and could turn up no evidence of his death, but I also failed to find any moderately recent info about him...
